Twincharged

did the above procedure twice actually 2 years back.

firs ttime was the worst !! I had a tear in my intestine and caused me to vomit blood - abt 30% of my blood and was sent to A&E at abt 10am. was intially told that the endo wud be done the next day. I was already abt half-dead when they dropped the bomb on me and told me that as it was urgent i had to do it at 4pm instead !!

was wheelled to the room and then told to lie on my left side. then was given a mouth guard to bite on on. the mouth guard has a hole abt 2cm for the endo-tube to pass thru.

asked me if i wanted a injection or numbing spray but i chose not to.

then it started, thee doc slowly guided the black endo tube into my mouth and then inside my throat. I think maybe my throat is smaller or i was very weak, i kept choking as the tube went in. kept getting stomach muscle cramp and the vomitting feeling too. I was also salivating on the table thru-out. The doc was "angry" as he said i was making my self cough and vomit !! KNNCCB !!

however, you'd be surprised how many things they can fit into a tube abt 1 cm thick - its got a light, a syringe, a suction device, a "stapler", and a camera !!

as the tube goes into the stomach, the suction device will help relieve the stomach gases, then when the doc saw the tear, he did a injection and then "stapled" up the tear. i thk over in abt 20 mins.

then i went back to the HDU and then vomitted out another cup of blood before resting down. was hospitalised for 1 week and given 1 mth MC.

after the 1mth, went back for another endo as the doc wanted to check on the recovery and also to verify some anomalies which the camera caught along the way in.

feeling was almost the same except i was more prepared for the second endo.

at the most, the doc will give you that day MC only. Usually they will not issue MC if just regular endo.

I requested for whole body aneathestic, which I slept thruout.Woke up and went back as if nothing happens.

I heard lots of stories and some of my frens told me that all most doctors won't give u much aneathestic or they will encourage u not to have it at all which happens to my father in law.

I told the doctor if you dun do that,I will puke or pull out the tube halfway thru.Even b4 he starts,I kept reminding him.I think he find me a nuisance and better for me to sleep. Anyway,he's a good doctor and I paid much lesser as I was referred by polyclinic and done it at NUH.If Im not wrong,u can use medisaves for endoscopy and colonscopy.

Also did it 2 yrs back.. To check for any stomach ulcer or other stuff. Chose to sleep thru it. Lying on the table, they gave the anaesthetic, and ask to to count down. Don't even remember doing the count down, the next moment I woke up and it was all over. Just need to rest to let the anaesthetic wear off before they release me.

My endoscopy was thru the arse for IBS @ TTSH. Given whole body aneathestic n I slept thru the whole procedure. The day b4 had to drink some powder mixed with water n ribena. After drinking it, within mins go toilet n bomb the entire toilet bowl till pain in the arse!!!

Mine cost me $900+ and was first deducted from medisave n then insurance reimbursed into medisave.

Glad to hear that. Can't imagine the scope going thru one's mouth had previously been up into someone else arse before. :o

Did it w/o anesthesia. Despite the discomfort, it is thrilling to see and explore the insides of your body through your gut.

Just that you cannot speak due to a tube shoved down your throat.

Have to do it to confirm a duodenal ulcer.

Oops, forgot to mention, mine was considered as private rate cos mine was referred by company clinic.

If ur case was referred by polyclinic, its subsidised rate, should be much cheaper than what I paid.

I learnt my lesson abt healthcare in SG, so nowadays if I need to see a specialist, I will go to polyclinic to get a referrer. Subsidised rate for consultation is S$29. Private rate for consultation is S$60+ and you will only be seen by one doctor only. Subsidised rate, any doctor on duty will attend to u, so u will see different doctors whenever u visit but there will be a specific doctor who is overall in charged of u.

My GP smart. When I encountered problems with my gut and he knew I needed scope work, he didn't charge me any fees and tell me go to polyclinic to get the referral.

Neutral Newbie

Did my endoscopy and colonscopy last year. Put to sleep and over in about 10 minutes, but woke up about 30 min later.

Good luck to you, if you are covered by your company just ask your company doctor for a referal.

I had my scope done before (colonoscope) and both times I could feel my scope in the intestines, especially when they were withdrawing. I had to drink some oral fleet to pass motion until everything is clear. Overall, the experience was OK, just that the second time, I put myt hands on my abdomen and felt something inside and I went "Oh OH" then sleep a bit and then "Oh Oh" hahaha. BTW, I am covered under the hospital scheme. I am a nurse so I now know what the patients feel like.

(edited)

I cannot imagine going thru gastroscopy and colonoscopy without sedation. Pls opt for sedation so that you do not get the gag reflex problem while going thru gastroscopy. When you wake up from sedation, it's like nothing has happened and you just feel like you have slept for a while. [thumbsup]

If you are past 50 years of age, I would suggest doing both at the same time. In private hospital, total cost around $2k+. If you opt to stay for 6 hrs at the hospital, you could claim insurance and use medisave as well.

Same to me. whole body aneathestic. I told the doctor that I will pull his tie and drag down all the equipment if he doesn't give me aneathestic.

I didn't feel any discomfort, and in fact my doctor also removed something from my stomach which i didn't feel any pain. After the procedure, rest at the hospital for 3 hours and I can go casino liao. I drove there somemore!! althought the nurse had reminded me not to drive.

I did it at Mt E, the procedure is covered by insurance or medisave coz I don't remember paying.
