I mean, lesser likelihood of them losing their lives etc.. anyone any comments hard to tell as we dunno the speed in which the accidents happened. but curtain airbags, seat airbags, anti-intrusion bars and strengthened body cage would have certainly offered a superior level of protection to a thaiyota camry. Kia0042 2nd Gear December 6, 2011 Share December 6, 2011 (edited) Not a volve fan, and not to mention about seat belt or so, purely judge from the impact, I think both survive if they were in volvo. Edited December 6, 2011 by Kia0042
Cheepo 3rd Gear December 10, 2011 Share December 10, 2011 Getting hit by a vehicle coming from the side is more likely with our numerous traffic junctions and turns. Peregrine Clutched December 10, 2011 Share December 10, 2011 (edited) Getting hit by a vehicle coming from the side is more likely with our numerous traffic junctions and turns. One of my uncles died after being hit by a bus along Woodlands Road. He was driving an older XJ. His fatal injury was on the right side of his head and face. A small lorry coming out of car park did not stop and hit my relative's car driving past on main road. The car was punched on the left side and rear swung out so car ended facing left. Both doors and B pillar dented. Collision speed was not very high, but his wife who was sitting (belted) of the left rear suffered badly bruised left arm because impact caused her to bang against the inside door handle. More serious injuries (from head to head collision) was prevented because her young daughter was secured in child seat at right rear. Most drivers do not know that side collion tests are done at only 50km/hr and a machine that simulate a car (not a heavy double-decker-bus) hitting car at right angle and at the B-pillar area. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_NCAP The speed and force of impact on the Camry by the double-decker-bus at Bishan Road & Street 14 seems to be higher and the oblique angle plus right corner hitting forward of B-pillar most likely meant that driver's head and right side (probably like in your uncle's case) hitting the window pane / door and structure of the bus. Although side and curtain air bags might have helped if the speed/force of impact was not so severe. The Camry and most cars in Singapore of that edge may not have curtain air bags. The doors of the Camry have reinforcement bars (see left rear damaged door in photo). http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2672079 Even if the driver was driving a Volvo, it is highly likely that he would have been severely injured or even killed in that serious collision. Do not be lulled into complacency thinking that Euro NCAP 5-Star crash test rating means that we will be safe when car collides into a wall at 90km/hr or be hit on side by a car running through red light at say 70km/hr. Nowadays it is very common for cars of various brands and country of design/manufacture to have 5-Star ratings. And having 4-Star rating does not mean that the standard is very much inferior. Even Geely Emgrand and Shanghai Automotive Industry MG6 have achieved 4-Star. See page E23 in today's Straits Times Life! motoring section. Can check on some NCAP crash test results at: http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/ncap/ncap_home.jsp As for the Integra accident, it seems most likely that young lady did not use the safety belt. She would have been flung out even if the car was a Vovlo, BMW or Mercedes! Edited December 10, 2011 by Peregrine
XenonWhite 1st Gear December 10, 2011 Share December 10, 2011 NCAP crash test also emphasise alot to pedestrian safety when this kinda of road user gets hit by a car.. So its not about crash test with cars at all times. Or else lorries and buses would have gotten 6 stars for those test.

Have a look at some latest test results from Euro NCAP: http://www.euroncap.com/Content-Web-Articl...quirements.aspx Interestingly and perhaps surprisingly, Jaguar XF got only 4-Star rating: http://www.euroncap.com/results/jaguar/xf/2011/464.aspx Knowing the limits of our car (and its tyre codition) and not having an inflated-ego about our driving ability plus being constantly aware of the traffic situation will probably help us to drive more safely and defensively!
