Irritating Chan Brothers radio advert in FM88.3..New Zealand becomes 新西兰/新西蘭 Xīnxīln.. when all along we learned that this place was called 纽西兰/ 紐西蘭 Niǔxīln... blink.gif

Twisting words that we are all used to hear...->from Wiki, "New Zealand" is represented as 纽西兰/ 紐西蘭 Niǔxīln in Taiwan, and 新西兰/新西蘭 Xīnxīln within mainland China.."

Can bet that the radio advert producer or writer is definitely an ah tiong PRC.... must be Chan Brothers damn cheapo and saving on advert costs... KNN...

Damn.. the world that I used to know is now twisted all out of recognition by these foreign trash imported rubbish words... rifle.gif

this i agree. however, the point one ought to remember is that heuristically speaking, when one romanises the term of reference pertaining to character, place or phenomenon, utmost effort has always been made to ensure that phonetically, the romanised version and the native term of reference do not deviate too far.

under the invasion of the PRC in newscasting and journal report, we are now having official China TV station in singapore.

Australia = 澳大利亚
New Zealand = 新西兰

In office with PRC colleagues, I always make sure I use 澳州 or 紐西蘭, just to let them know where they are.

We were just joking about this just now.. From Wiki, " Taiwan here uses 紐 Niǔ for "New" phonetically in the same manner as 纽约 Niǔyuē (New York), whilst mainland China uses the semantic transcription 新 xīn which literally means "new" in Chinese. "

Heng, New York is still 纽约 Niǔyuē and not 新约 xīnyuē... wacko.gif Hahahaha..... laugh.gif At least until the Ah Tiongs try to be funny and twist things around their way again...

Things have been changing alot in SG in the last 2 decades since the scums in white open leg wide wide and let in all the foreigners... even our languages and culture have been arm twisted to suit other people's style.. who says Ch 8 is not China infested station now? Kee Chiu!

Singaporeans will be extinct in 20 years.... Chinapore or Indiapore will rise..... Will you still be around then?? Vote wisely.....

Because Koreans feel insecure, having their capital named after the Han Chinese. Being a Chinese vassal state for >1,000 years, it is called Hanseong, Hanyong, Hanju. At least their river is still called Han River, but dunno for how long, maybe change to Soul River.

yes...............this is another point..............

There are many many examples of names being romanized and changed.

The that springs easily to mind is the CCCP / USSR

And there are a couple of others that are dancing just beyond the reach of my memory.

As to whether it should be Xin Xi Lan or Niu Xi Lan - if it were up to me, I would use the respective characters to decide. There are a few native terms for New Zealand, so if something close can be found that would be best.

One such name is The Land of the Long White Cloud, which is the most commonly accepted literal translation of Aoetearoa. The South Island is generally known as Te Wai Pouneamou (I just know I've spelt that wrong) which is literally "Land of Green Stone" (speaking from memory so apologies if I've parahrased)

The North Island doesn't count tongue.gif
