$70 fine for ERP misdemeanour

Published on Feb 28, 2012

THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) dispatched a letter to me last week informing me that I did not have an ERP card inserted when I entered an Electronic Road Pricing zone. What shocked me was the $70 fine.

It was an honest mistake and besides, most motorists would not deliberately cross an ERP gantry without having an inserted card, knowing full well that there would be no escape from the clutches of the LTA.

Previously, one would be fined only $10 for the offence. In fact, one was given a $2 discount if one paid electronically. That, I thought, was a nice gesture and punishment enough when the cost of entering the ERP zone was only 50 cents.

Since when did the LTA decide to raise the fine to $70? What is the reason for spiking the fee amount so drastically?

Such a punitive fine is unwarranted, especially since the LTA does not have a convenient system of settling ERP charges, requiring motorists to top up their cards ever so often.

I think the offence may not be just forget to insert the cash card into IU while crossing the ERP gantry.

Let's wait for more info from LTA if the discussion is hot enough to warrant their response

the last time it happen to me, cashcard inside but no deduction, LTA ask me go vicom check my ERP IU before issuing any fine.

Why $70? There were a couple of times I forgot and it was only $10. He must have either passed through 7 gantries without a card. Hmm... Will be interesting to see the reply from LTA.

Is there a difference in treatment when a cash card is present (but not inserted properly) or not at all inside the IU when a vehicle goes under when a ERP is in operation?

His case was that he "did not have an ERP card inserted" (he meant cash card right?) so not sure it is no card or not slot in properly.

Still the $70 fine is puzzling... [confused]

Have to hear LTA's side of the story then.

He had been fine before and he continue abusing it..... -_-

He pawn his own statement with the word 'Previously', so he never learn his lesson ... [;)]

Next fine would be $120/- ...... [sly]

I have also been whacked with this.

NO CARD - $70

No funds - $11 (or whatever)

Your experiences sort of clears the air then.

This chap was spotted by the system without a "ERP card" i.e. cash card then & like your case kena the $70 fine.

Case closed.

there was once I went in to inspect IU as cannot read..then in the process they found out that there was one incident of no card detected a few months back.. that lady also puzzled why I never received anything. In the end waived it due IU spoil. ^_^
