Our ITE is modeled exactly after the Germans technical education scheme.

 

That is why Singapore also got very low youth unemployment!

Even if it were implemented in Sg, Sg youths may be picky and reject/think its not prestigious bla bla bla

Yes, they have these apprenticeship scheme, but again, like the employment system, the youth still have to compete for the more coveted employers.

 

But the main points are these:

(1) Vocational training, like these apprenticeships, and later, blue-collar jobs, do not have low status over there. And the salaries and opportunities can match white-collar jobs.

(2) The youth somehow have an interest in the jobs they learn during apprenticeships.

 

We don't have these conditions here in singapore.

 

First, blue-collar jobs enjoy little respect, with low wages. And you can see that our education system nowadays is geared towards producing univ graduates. Poly students now consider their diploma as a stepping stone to a degree - and not an opportunity to specialize in practical, hands-on skills. Even ITE students now have a route to go poly, and then the same path to get a degree. With all this emphasis on degree as the ultimate aim, practical skills have now taken a backseat.

 

Secondly, somehow I don't see youth here as being interested in much beyond their textbooks (for exams) and their electronic gadgets.

The main reason was because last time....we got cheap mechanics labour from Malaysia. They undercut the salary.

 

Now we got Chinese cheap mechanics from china. They undercut the salary.

 

In Germany, there are few overseas workers to come and undercut the mechanics salary.

 

Singapore has all along being undercut here and there....how to have appreciation for these foreigner mechanics that come and goes very frequent.

 

And the poor perceptions for these skilled workers has thus being unfavorably formed in many mind sets.

Our environment different. The hard truth: Government officers only keen on academic scholars. Skilled carftmen are neglected/thump-down. Now we even have foreigners as Resident Engineers who practice close-one-eye when they can not managed the job. The priority is academic qualifications, not value-for-money work delivery. Some call it work smart, not work hard. Example: Ever told 20 years service only ASP. 2 years experience can be Asst. Director. Construction industry: Foreigners who do not know the job can be Resident Engineer. Locals can only be Resident Technical Officers.

Last GE: new candidate can defeat new candidate from PAP. New GRC can defeat existing PAP GRC. Time has changed.

teenage pregnancies. So there is something else kids are interested in besides books and gadgets.

Recently interviewed a few fresh poly grads for a position in my company.

Some of the FT fresh poly grads told me outright that they will not come for the interview if they are only given work permit for the fresh poly position.

You are right. To qualify as an engineer or even technician, you have to prove yourself in internship, not like Singapore, where you need only a cert. Not so easy to be a full pledge engineer in Germany.

 

By the way, engineers in Germany have title also. You get this Ing (short for Ingenieur->engineer) title in front of you name, like Ing. Brad Pitt, macham like Dr. Brad Pitt .

Not surprising for their senior engineering personnel, engineering manager, etc. to be PhD level. That's the amount of technical know-how they require.

Those kind sure side-track already lah... not even talking about apprenticeship!

 

I'm saying that even the so-called good students from pedigree, branded schools here... few are interested in things beyond their exams and acad progress nowadays. No passion for a hobby, etc. especially those that require skills like building models, gadgets, etc.

In Spore, Professional engineers also got Er in front of name.

But most of the Er i've encountered so far are for the 'chop' only. They are not very good.

The young pple know dip or cert won't provide them the money they need to maintain their preferred life style here. In fact, a deg is not much better in this regards. Costs of housing, education etc (not talking about car) are high. They have to consider more realistic expectations / preferences.
