Pump prices: More effective options needed, other than Case

Published on Jun 5, 2012

IT WOULD appear that even the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) is unable to make any meaningful headway with the petrol companies in its calls for greater transparency in pricing their retail products ('No drop in pump prices: Case seeking explanation from oil firms'; last Thursday).

Its approaches to the oil companies continue to be ignored. So what else can consumers do?

I recall reading that one strategy to bring down pump prices is to organise a consumers' boycott of the biggest petrol retailer in the market, to force it to lower its prices to win back customers.

If this succeeds, it was argued, the retailer's competitors will feel the pressure to lower their prices as well, to retain their market share.

With pump prices down, transportation costs will be reduced and so will the cost of living, to some extent; all of which benefits the public.

Would any organisation, such as Case, the Automobile Association of Singapore or the labour movement, consider mounting such a drastic and massive undertaking?

Hypersonic

I thought SPC was supposed to keep the prices of the other companies in check. Apparently they failed big time, and decided to join the rest.

SPC is now own by China.

3/4 rule changed to 1/2 tank rule. this would force them to change

The aim of this ruling is to protect these companies not it's citizens [shakehead][shakehead]

SPC Ron98 is cheaper than the rest.

But then hor.....did the drivers all flock to SPC to pump 98?

Apparently NOT.

So you see......it's not selling cheaper means more driver will go to the cheaper brand.

Singaporeans actually don't care!

That is why petrol company don't need to worry about price competition at all.

How many people here really pump SPC 98 because it's cheaper and worth it? I am sure not many.

Some still believe in vpower and little Caltex men cleaning their valves, rather than PRC SPC fuel.

Angmoh still tua Kia when it comes to fuel branding.
