Pure concentrated ethylene glycol is colourless.

Isn't this a reflectometer?

What is the reference index for 50% coolant / water mixture?

Yes, it's a refractometer designed with scales for reading anti-freeze coolant ( ethylene & propylene glycol ), washer windshield washer liquid and battery sulphric acid SG.

For 50% concentrated EG the indicator line on the scale is on freeze temp of -36 deg C ( 107 deg C boiling temp)

Most mech are using hydrometers for testing coolant, for higher accuracy many are switching to using refractormeter .post-272-1341587261_thumb.jpg

Should be easier to use.

 

I have the general type.

 

So if I want to test coolant solution concenration, I have to premix myself reference solution.

Supercharged

Today I change my coolant

 

Bought Toyota long life coolant for $30. Go to my usual ws. I have never change my coolant before since the day I bought the car. Honda. The coolant is factory stock when I bought the car. Green colour. Drove for 6 years with 93000 km mileage now. Thought I better change the coolant now. Overdue liao

 

Went to my usual ws. The guy just drain the old coolant completely and pour in the Toyota coolant. I quickly asked him how come never use water to flush out the old coolant out. He say no need. Flush already , still have old coolant inside.

 

He v confident in assuring me everything will be all right. Ok, since he's my regular mech, I have to trust him

 

Let's see if anything screws up later ........

Toyota long life coolant is premix and no water to be added. Usually the flushing off the old coolant cannot use water have to use the premix coolant to do it.

Nothing will screw up. He just didn't do a thorough job.

 

A thorough flush would be to bring the engine to operating temp, so that the thermostat is open.

All the coolant inside the engine is free to move out to the radiator (even those in the heater core and going to the throttle body) and be drained off somewhere.

Then new coolant can then be replaced more completely.

 

By opening the valve at the radiator, you just draining about 1/3 of what the whole cooling system is holding.
