not sure how u could missed that setting, it's so easy to find, just inside 'display''.... I think it's the same for all android base phone....

What I want is dim down (ie. gray out) before blackout 100%, Android seems to skip the dim down step (see below)

 

eg:

Iphone: Active screen -> dim down (ie. gray out) -> blackout 100%

 

Galaxy Note: Active screen -> blackout 100%

No way to do that for AMOLED screens unless you purposely overlay a software filter to dim it. there is no separating lighting element e.g. fluorescent lamp to light up the screen when it comes to AMOLED. the individual led pixel is responsible for displaying as well as illuminating. The dimming and blackout separately is due to the fluorescent lamp and LCD screen panel have different set time outs.

Those are using software rendered screen filters too. fyi.

 

usually these apps are meant to help achieve sub-zero brightness levels meaning, lower than the lowest possible brightness that you are able to set under Settings>Brightness. Some apps can also perform red tinting to preserve your night vision especially when you are viewing in a totally dark environment.

 

Been there, done that. CM9 allows you to modify the AMOLED brightness response curve from within Framework-res.apk so i ditched the apps for lower overheads.
