I thought the system know whether they are fetching client or driving ard not taking passenger

Thought so too. Like when it rains they all disappear and what for the rain to go away.

LTA sets operating requirements for taxi companies

By Dylan Loh | Posted: 23 November 2012 1137 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has set minimum standards for taxi availability.

From January 2013, 70 per cent of all taxis, per cab company, will have to reach a minimum daily mileage of 250 kilometres.

This translates to around eight to nine hours on the road per day, five days a week.

Cab companies will also need to ensure that 70 per cent of their entire fleet are on the roads during the morning and evening peak periods.

Based on these indicators, authorities will evaluate if taxi firms are allowed to grow their fleet.

- CNA/xq

So based on mathematical calculations, to ensure 70% of their fleet on the road will be by just reducing their fleet size. *loophole*

There was a recent study done investigating why it is so difficult to get taxis during wet weather. The reason was that taxi drivers also take cover not to drive on rainy days due to the increased possibility of an accident and losing their deposits. So why wasn't this addressed as well?

Don't think the they measure the taxis using odo. Wireless GPS systems will solve the problem. Still can prove what time and how long the taxi was on the road.

Save manpower costs.

I don't be surprised if the taxi meters are already capable of capturing such data, otherwise how the heck it knows when to "jump" after xx meters.

All these of course can be transmitted wireless back to their HQ, together with the driver's earnings.

This is a move I support. Each cab is hogging 1 COE, so it should be doing what it is supposed to do.

It's more to hogging 1 road space, resulting in artificial congestions and ERP up again.

LTA schoolar are just trying to make themselves look good and pass the buck to taxi companies.

How to enforce?

What penalties for failing to meet target?

Running on empty? LTA want to help pay for petrol?

But then again, 250km is easy to hit.

But not for very old single shift drivers

+1.. This Rule will not solve the problem of WHERE the taxi drivers are when clocking the 250KM a day... he can jolly well cruise around Lim Chu Kang all day to hit 250km, & yet this stoopid rule will not solve the BIG problem of taxi not available in town...

LTA scholars thinking thru the butt hole again...

After raise taxi fare still cannot increase taxi supply in town, now must take out big stick and FORCE taxi drivers to drive more to fulfill their LTA KPI and make the Tpt Minister Look [sunny] ... [rifle].. really inhuman rule...

Those old taxi drivers sick or tired cannot drive long to clock the 250Km then how? What penalty for them??

Mind you, all these taxi drivers still pay the same HIGH daily rental to the cab co, yet kena more stoopid rules like these from LTA...

Soon, taxi driving will be a young man job and the taxi lao chek can only clean kopitiam table liao.... oh, that is taken over by PRC liao...

Damn cham...... [knife]

haha... might as well fine tune to enforce taxi to clock min 50km in CBD areas... lol

omg.... am i giving them a idea???

then back to square one still...

who enforce?

LTA paying taxi companies extra for manpower to do the monitoring or upgrade system to monitor?

later enforce lwith penalties, taxi drivers KPKB, all give back taxi to company

then taxi co and government say Singaporeans picky. 1 month 7k also no one want to drive taxi

then hire FT to drive....

problem solved

I wonder if some of you guys here could do a better job in temrs on analytical skills and kick out those that see things on surface only. Every policy / reuglations come out by relevent agencies does affect a lot of people. Sigh.

Than consequences / effect will be felt at later stage. May not be that good.

Looks like they are running around in circles, those so call scholars are trying to solve one problem and end up creating more congestion problems, more pollution, more wears and tears on the vehicles, very tire and irritation drivers, end result, more accidents, more fighting with customers, and hopefully not more family breakdown.

The society is getting bad , very bad, super bad [bigcry]

Sometimes doing nothing is the best solution. Once relevent agencies come out with a solution, it may backfire and make it worst.

I mean as in let things adjust by itself and solution maybe solved by the adjustment without any regulations adding in.

How about not allowing taxis to buy season parking? This way cannot drive to cover cost and then go home and sleep.

What I can deduce from this new requirements :

1. The gov forgot about their green initiative to cut pollution. By forcing the drivers to go more than they should, they are contributing to more wear and tear, resulting in more parts replacement and consuming more diseal than before. Gov agencies not talking to each other again or the sorelers (scholars) never thought of it.

2. Next step after point 1, more $$$ spent in maintenance and fuel = woohaaa ... increase in GDP and a pat on their backs for higher bonuses.

3. Remember GPS ERP coming? This is as good as securing a minimum income of 250km per day from the taxis drivers.

Pity them, in future, empty cab cruise around still have to worry about distance based ERP.

4. Showing that the demands for taxis have eased, time to open flood gates again to the economic refugees.

Anyway, the incentive of halving the TDL is only $20. Nothing they can do even if the drivers don't clock the milage.

Who's there to enforce the new ruling?

+1 to your statement.

Whatever the gov touches, the feel is gone and it'll be doomed to a failure. So many examples ... want to have a clean Chinatown, but after the cleanup, the new Chinatown don't look like the past. Street fares look so faked. The original atmosphere is gone.

Sprunce up Tiger Balm gardens, it's not a ghost town, other than the occasional busloads of tourists. Locals no longer visit the place compared to the crowd back in the 70s and 80s.

Is Chinese Gardens still around? That is another popular icon in the 80s, not sure what is the status now.

On the other hand, a modernised Hongkong still has the authenticate and triving street hawkers.

Can't help but have the feeling that the urban planners are trying to get rid of our past connections and trying to impress. The names of so many places known in Hokkein are long gone and replaced with fanciful names. Take Fernvale in Jln Kayu, I'm very sure this place is known as something else in the past. Also, they are trying to make SG look like 1st world of the 1st world, but without the feeling and atmosphere.

Motivated cab drivers have nothing to worry from these measures because they will attain it easily.

If you park at Pearls Centre on a Saturday afternoon, you can see up to 20% of the car parked are cabs, the reason being there is a jockey club simulcast there, so those cabbies are obviously there to gamble on horses rather than picking up shopping customers on busy Saturday.

I think LTA aim at these people, rightly so.
