Go malaysia if u find the cost too high.

if cost is a concern and your dad still want to followup with polyclinic, maybe the irbesartan can be changed to a cheaper medicine.

Few yrs ago doctor told me that my cholesterol was reaching the roof. Given some drug to try to lower it but it caused constipation. Decide to go on a natural diet of polished rice, reduced my egg, crustacean and started to eat more veggies. It did the trick and brought my cholesterol level to normal range after 1.5 yrs. Now its back to square 1 cos its harder to keep to the diet cause its no fun.

ok, i go tell him, but i doubt he will diet [:/]

thanks man!!! [grouphug]

Thanks man! My dad is 63, he just went thru sterns inserts, 2 times

He looks ok

I hope he continues to be ok, at least my sons saw him and lived with him

I hardly saw my granddads

Sorry to hear about his condition.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I ask he discontinue cholesterol pills.

What I suggest is he also tries more "au natural cures" in the form of food, like old black vinegar and others.

When I went to polyclinic and do their tests, it's always about prescribing cholesterol pills and diabetes pills.

Within certain limits, I stopped the pills and change my diet, exercise a bit more and I don't feel any worse.

Look I'm not a doctor but ezetimibe and atorvadtatin both appear from wikii to lower cholesterol.

Why not discuss with your dad's specialist if a change from both of these to simvastatin will be appropriate. He can only say no.

That would save a lot of dosh.

Also I see from wikii that irbesartan reduces hypertension.

I use ramipril for that 2.5 mg per day to lower my BP.

A 5mg tablet costs one dollar and I cut this in half.

Ramipril have been great for me and lowered my BP a lot to within good levels.

It also helped my liver and kidney function.

Simvastatin and Ramipril work well for my problems I dunno how they might work with you dad but if they were accetable to your dad's specialist then they could save him a lot of money.

You can only ask.

ok, i ask my dad to check with his doctor....

Thanks man!!! [grouphug]

Irbesartan is either for hypertension or urine protein leakage. There are cheaper types of medicine for these. Check if your dad had a cough to any previous medicine, maybe one of the reasons why he's using the more expensive medicine.

Atorvastatin + acarbose + ezetimibe is quite a lot of medications for cholesterol control, probably ur dad's cholesterol is difficult to control.

If you find the medicines too expensive, just let the poly doctor know. It's a common request.

At the end of the day, pleaser realise that any medical opinions given here should not be taken seriously. Always go back to your clinician. Drs ar ethere for a reason. Mustank just wants cheeper medicine, and other forms of 'advise', changing meds, etc, should NOT BE CONSIDERED without due consultaiton and MUSTANK cannot sue the members here also if anything goes wrong. the onus is on MUSTANK to check, verify with his clinician..

See lah, start thread sure give trouble...wtf

As with any medicine (drugs), they are usually poisonous in large amount.

Beware of the newest cutting-edge drugs. They are usually not enough "lab rat test" and the public becomes the test subjects once FDA approved. Drug companies are big business and politically linked.

When I was with private (company) doctor, he always prescribed Avandia for diabetes.

Later I found it was associated with heart failures and lawsuits.

Polyclinic tend to prescribe cheaper and more proven medicine, so they don't use Avandia.

Similarly for cholesterol, they always prescribe simvastatin.

i understand that the changing medicine can only be done after seeking doctor's approval. i will do a two prong approach:

1) Get dad to see doctor and ask whether cheaper med can do

2) whether option (1) can work or cannot work, i go JB buy

i am not sure why the polyclinic gave him these expensive meds. it could have been that when he was under the care of SGH heart centre, they alraedy gave him these meds. maybe the polyclinic guys just continue giving the same stuff

u got it right [;)]

Polyclinic to start some of these medicines by themselves, need to submit special reasons one.

Probably your father's health and blood tests are all good on these medications, so the poly just continue it.
