Garmin is good. I am now using the 2565. It has some value added features which I find useful blue tooth and Voice Command. Its quite accurate, far better than Siri from my iphone.

If you dun need all these features, you can get some of the entry-level from Garmin. After all, the main reason for a GPS is accurate navigation. Other value added functions, like car video camera ( Garmin , Marbella has ) are good to have but not a must.

Singapore maps, once updated, are up-to-date. And I do see signficant changes too after the update, such as the Bendemeer flyover+interchange and new minor roads. However newer buildings like ITE AMK which is going to TOP, cannot be found on the latest update, which is of coz understandable.

International maps can be rented from the Garmin shop in Orchard Central. A full map cost hundreds so its more cost effective to rent, unless you are staying there for long term.

Dun be greedy lah. Where got international map? :D

GPS are pretty straight forward device. The main components are the GPS chip, processor, touch screen, OS(eg. Garmin) and the map source.

Actually how good is the GPS device largely depends on the map, how updated that is so that it's accurate.

Google mfm, it's a community of ppl using mostly Asia maps, it's updated by their users, a lot of Garmin users. Just register as a user.

Buying international maps there are many ways. Either use a smartphone and buy the various country map apps or you search online for maps eg. http://uud.info/en/shop/ Japan map for Garmin device and buy online. No free lunch lah.

If you are already a smartphone/iphone user dan you might as well spent the $150-$200 on purchasing the OS(eg. Garmin) with the maps.

You must also consider the frequency you are using the device. A lot of ppl just chuck it one side or sell it after a while. A smartphone also has all the main components and what matters are the OS and the update of maps plus it's always with you. A stand alone GPS I find it too bulky to carry around, map updates using SD card to transfer here transfer there, too troublesome. Smartphone is easier, as long as you are connected map updates are easy.

If you are really keen dan go to the website I suggested(mfm) see who selling a used unit and see whether it suits your wants/needs.

Like what most people recommended, you won't go wrong with a Garmin. It is the no. 1 GPS manufacturer in the world and supported by maps of almost every country in the world. Buy one that suits your need and within your budget. Any GPS you buy will come with a map of your country and maybe even neighbouring countries. Garmin models nowadays come with lifetime free map update for the Garmin CN map of Singapore and Malaysia, so you don't have to worry having obsolete map. As for one that comes with an international map, the only one that I know of is from Tom Tom which I recently read about it. As a Garmin user, I don't really pay particular attention to any other brand/model but from what I know Tom Tom is a top brand in US and Europe besides Garmin but beyond that they have not been successful until lately where they started to make a foray into other markets. Map wise, nobody beats Garmin. You can get maps for Garmin of almost any country in the world online if you know where to search for it and how to go about it installing it for your device. Having said that, for a Tom Tom device to come with an international map, it is going to be an expensive device considering the price of a map of any particular country when they sell individually. Then again, the word "international" is subjective and it can be just a number of countries and it is highly unlikely to cover every countries in the world. For your budget, you can buy an entry level GPS device from Garmin or TOm Tom which is more than good enough for your navigation.

probably gonna head up to challenger and see/look/feel the garmin later on . haha

Can't really test 'cos inside building no GPS coverage.

You probably can't go wrong with the tried and tested brand Garmin than any other Chapalang brands for virgin set.

Some people rave it's the most user-friendly though I disagree. However, I still own one as it's robust.

I wouldn't even hesitate about getting a garmin.

I had 2 and wouldn't even think about getting other brands.

MY/SG map is excellent from the public communities.

Other countries map can always get the "free" way.

it seems that my parents are more into marbella especially marbella geomate 500 if im not wrong. oh well i can't really stop them because majority of the time they use it more then I do .

Firstly , they are fascinated with the big screens that marbella have then the garmin .

Secondly , I'm not sure if Garmin have this feature whereby you type VIV it will auto direct to Vivocity . Like those normal search google like that HAHA. So to them this is a plus point to them.

Thirdly, I'm not sure if Garmin have this feature to know the parking rates of shopping centres . Its a plus point for me because i usually use the car on weekends with friends to Towns.

I think that it i guess. HAHA !
