Hong Kong: Working Life in HK?

Anyone been to Hong Kong to work, or for business trip before?

Can share how is the work life there? Is the working culture same as in Sg? Wage level same as us? Work pace is slower/faster pace than us? Is working there more relaxed or stressful as compared to here? etc?

Any comments well appreciated! [wave] [wave]

I've lived in HK for more than 10 years now. My occupation is rather unorthodox, my schedule is flexible and I don't work in an office downtown like many others do, so I have no first-hand experience with this. But from what I know, people here work equally long hours, or sometimes longer. Pace of life is definitely faster than Singapore in many ways... HK people move fast, do things fast and can be quite impatient. People are stressed out quite a bit. Expect it to be no better, if no worse, than Singapore. Furthermore, the cost of living can be quite high too - although you might be able to get cheap food, you'll be spending quite a bit on transport and especially housing. Speaking of which the size of apartments in HK will really shock you if you haven't been in one before.

I believe housing is the biggest expenses. HK have efficient public transport system, that's for sure. So there's no need for car there. Just wondering how stressful work can be there.. If it's on par with Sg, at least it's something normal (if go there to work long term). From wat I know also, HK people generaly have higher spending power than us due to their higher wage (i may be wrong?) That makes me ponder how their working envirnoment can be!

Not really. Although the train fares start slightly less (for 1 station, HK$4 or approx SG 60+ cents as opposed to 73 cents with a farecard (EZ Link or OCtopus), they end higher too, at HK$24 being the highest for a single trip within the city itself (not one of the border stations to Shenzhen). But again, the distances are longer.

Feeder buses can be very cheap, sometimes as low as SG 50cents, but most of the buses that travel between districts cost more than Singapore. And the only thing I don't like about HK's buses is that if you get up from an early point but get off early, you have to end up paying the full fare, unlike Singapore where you can pay sectional fares.

Apart from buses, there are minibuses, which are more expensive than buses but cheaper than taxis.

Food is cheaper because pay is higher in hk? (Comparing the same position and person in sg)

The lowest end food is comparable or slightly less than SG's equivalent (mainly because of the exchange rate. It's now 1 to 6.++) In some places, it's possible to get a bowl of wonton noodles (for example) for HK$15 (SG$2++), but this is the exception rather than the rule and more commonly found in quiet, dingy industrial areas, and the hygiene standards are really questionable. In most other more accessible places expect to pay at least HK$20+ (still reasonable).

This one I find quite reasonable, at least it's comparatively fast (20+ min). There are city buses which will come up to $20 - $40 per pax, but takes at least an hour to reach. Taxi takes about 40+ minutes and will be $200+ at least. Airport Express is still the best bet.

Yup, Octopus has many uses, can buy things just about anywhere nowadays

I once was in Hong Kong for a business trip where my vendor company was located. It was a week long. They are very fast-paced, reported to work quite early and knocked off late. Maybe 'cos I was their customer, all were quite friendly to me. The coffee lady kept asking me if I wanted any snacks or drinks. [:p]

They are quite good at what they are doing though their office has down-sized due to the poor economy, they did not retrench any of their staff. And many of them has worked over 10 years in the company..........
