Ideas for a satellite-based electronic road pricing system are being evaluated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Four consortiums submitted proposals after testing various technological solutions between June 2011 and December last year.

The next-generation ERP, which Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said is likely to be feasible but still several years away, could charge motorists based on how far they travel on congested roads.

A spokesman for the authority said ideas submitted by the consortiums could form the base for developing the system. He added: "We will still need some time to review and evaluate the performance of the proposals... before we can make a final decision on the way forward."

I have no privacy issues as I have nothing to hide but my identity. If it means that I pay lesser road tax due to my lower than average yearly mileage then by all means , implement the damn thing already.

If you don't mind them tracking every single detail of where you go, how fast you go, where you park etc, then OK.

Can we as tax payer audit their charges? Can they ensure that the charges can be accurate? At times my car GPS loses signal.. so not sure what level of accuracy they can achieve, or ensure consumers that their charges are accurate?

The better track the speed of cars. Road hoggers and speed demons can be issued a summon immediately. Fix a biometric reader replacing the IU so that the summon follows the driver instead of the car registration number.

Speed demon yes, road hogger if you are talking about for e.g. 90km/h on lane 1 unlikely to be summon. Instead, I think lane 1 would be slower overall if they use this system for speed limit summon.

I thought there are things such as GPS blockers, which are really portable. Are those illegal?

Neutral Newbie

those who end up paying less, will probably pay 10% less while those who end up paying more will likely pay 50% more.

all i can foresee for this exercise is an inordinate process of testing and installation which would be just a waste of taxpapers money.

tbh i am fully expecting to pay more in the future and i would rather they just increase the ERP rates or even the fuel surcharges
