Wt_know Supersonic June 22, 2013 Share June 22, 2013 fine is no use ... fine means money and money is what they have and what they want to make more out from the burning justice must be served ... jail the culprit having said that, a law must be passed that forest fire counter measure must be put up ie: make each plantation for every acre has a huge water tank ... when there is forest fire ... the water tank can be activated or broken to flood the plantation some sort there must be counter measure and cannot always hide behind that this nature and fire was caused by dry season with the counter measure setup, there is no motivation for these companies to burn their plantation anymore as the preventive measure can be activated fine is nothing ... if money can solve the problem ... there is no problem they have plenty of money and these dirty money was made through you me and everyone who use their product Fine the company heavily. Just ask ourselves: Do you use shampoo or detergent? Enjoy ice cream, margarine? Cosmetics like lipsticks etc? All the above and more, need palm oil. So naturally Oil Palm companies will always be seeking more land and forest to plant their crop. The more, the better, the cheaper to sell in volume. Hence we as consumer will save some $. One of the largest Palm Oil coy is actually in own, managed and run by Singaporean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilmar_International own by Singaporean billionare Now, I am not accusing Wilmar for the conducting illegal slash and burn method at their plantation in Sumatra here. What I am showing is there is much larger supply chain in this Industry that has indirectly result in ecological destruction in some of the region's priceless primay Forest. Wishcumstrue 6th Gear June 23, 2013 Author Share June 23, 2013 (edited) Lot of BS. so now blame the consumer ? Deforestation will not bring you haze if it is done properly. If you against the palm oil, please apply the same logic to the other agriculture product, be it wheat, rice or soya bean. Where do you think those farmer in US/Europe get their land for their plantation if not deforestation. Incorrect. You sound like the Indonesian minister who said the current fire is due to "nature". It is not. Do you know there are difference between natural forest fire vs large scale plantation fire set by human? The differences in scale, location and timing. Deforestation IS and THE primary activity which cause large scale fire in plantation which lead to sever haze condition we see now. Usually, forest fires infrequent and seldom starts even during normal dry seasons in the tropics. What we are seeing now is UNNATURAL process of slash-&-burn method done by Man done at a YEARLY basis and growing ever larger. This we know. Aren't you aware too? For consumer-driven, I am afraid you are avoiding certain responsible we as consumer have. We can do something about this - reduce your consumption. Now, is this too hard to do for each of us? Another is via social pressure on those huge and powerful conglomerates who are involved in this Industry. The primary target will be Singapore-based companies, some of whom had apparently had some very cozy relation with our some of Singapore's politicians and elites. Do you want me to share who are the "elites" who have close tie with these Palm Oil giants? There will be no free lunch when comes to protecting OUR environment - and when I say "OUR", I meant every human, no just Indonesian or Singaporean, PS: US crops are mostly GM-products, staff that are banned in EU. All US/EU crops do not use slash-&-burn as it is strictly enforced. Edited June 23, 2013 by Wishcumstrue

True, when there is no demand, they would not need to do it so big scale. So basically is hope there is a breakthrough in innovation/technology which reduce the need of palm oil, or alternate renewable resources that is more environment friendly.
