SINGAPORE - Singaporean teachers are the highest paid among 21 countries according to a study, earning an average annual salary of US$45,755, ahead of the United States' US$44,917 and South Korea's US$43,874.

But respondents in Singapore felt that local teachers were overpaid by about $5,000 annually - almost 14 per cent higher than what they perceived to be fair.

This was in contrast to most of the other countries surveyed for the Varkey GEMS Foundation 2013 Global Teacher Status Index, in which they assessed actual wages to be below perceived fair wages.

In fact, respondents from 95 per cent of the surveyed countries thought teachers were earning less than what they ought to.

In the Teacher Status Index - which measures cultural, political and socio- economic factors, such as general attitudes towards the education system and perception of teachers in each country - Singapore was ranked seventh, surpassing the US (No 9), the United Kingdom (No 10) and Finland (No 13).

China topped the rankings, followed by Greece, Turkey and then South Korea.

Singapore came in third with regard to confidence and trust in the national education system.

Finland took top position, followed by Switzerland.

Which dua kang sabo king respondents are these, spoil market for the poor teachers? No lam par to take on the MIW, so tekan the teachers.

I am personally in favour of hiring the best teachers and keeping them satisfied. The most important resource in our country (the future of our children) is in their hands.

Being a teacher is not an easy job. Try talking to teenagers and young kids and see if your blood boils [bounce1]

I don't think they are paid exceeding well? Most of them still do sideline tuition to supplement their income.

Teachers deserved to be paid high, not like some others out there [sly]

Teaching profession is a thankless job where one really has to put in hours and hours of work. Not only do they need to teach, they must be involve in other activities in school too. So ya, I think teachers should be paid even more than they are getting now.

Agree with you. Good ones are difficult to come by and want to be a teacher. In the olden days, stress comes mainly from school..but now, they also have to deal with many different types of parent demanding different things. I often looks at my kids' teachers and think to myself that I am not one of them.

Mmm, highest paid I agree totally.

but as for respect for teachers, mmm, I don't think that is as high as the report stated.

I think the respect is much greater for teachers in Finland.

As a matter of fact, MOE had a field visit to Finland in the past to try to learn from their education system.

Teaching is a passion. Very difficult to measure in monetary terms.

Monetary comes only second or third placings. You may be very good in your specialised field, but if you don't have the passion and ability to translate your knowleage to something for students' ability to absorb the crap coming out of your mouth, then salary can't even be on the discussion table.

I have a fren in teaching, and as long as a person can separate work from personal life, and not take things personally, then he or she is suited for teaching! [laugh]

After all, the job is not dealing with multi-million deals, or life-and-death matter, as I always say. So why the 'stress'? I understand that even if the teacher is rated as poor performer, the job is still quite protected. Cannot get dismissed, unless it's for disciplinary issue or crime.

Iron rice bowl, kind of, as my fren stated. But really must be able to stand the nonsense of the youth these days, and even more so, from the parents. To me, it's starting to look like service industry... maybe one day, teaching will be mostly taken up by FT? That'll be fun...

It was in the past and now and future.

Last time, quite a number my secondary teachers and principal are from MY which was OK since culturally we are still quite close

Now, I reckon there are many from PRC and India teaching languages, Maths and Science. This one I am doubtful.

As long as they are teaching their own native language it is okay. Just don't teach english if they are not good in it.
