Darthrevan Supercharged October 21, 2013 Share October 21, 2013 The Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) clarified today (Oct 21) that of the 2,438 motor vehicle complaints reported by the Straits Times on Saturday, only 1,084 were related to defective goods. The article — “Grouses about car dealers speeding up” — stated that the 2,438 complaints the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) received from January to September this year has exceeded the 2,255 made in the whole of last year. SVTA President Neo Tian Ting explained that the figure of 2,438 also includes enquiries and feedback, which do not require CASE to take action. Mr Neo also said that the spike in complaints this year can be attributed to the lemon law, which came into effect last September. Consumers, he said, could be contacting CASE more often as there is a misunderstanding of the lemon law. In fact, only 156 were filed and assisted cases pursued against SVTA members in relation to the lemon law and other complaints such as delays in delivery and misrepresentation — meaning CASE handled claims on the consumers’ behalf or assisted the consumers in drafting letters to approach the vendors themselves. Singapore has about 800 to 900 car dealers. About 410 of them are SVTA members. The fact that the number of complaints exceeded last year's figure showed how bad it is getting...and there seems no improvement from these dealers. And how come only half of the total car dealers are SVTA members? I tot should be all of them....

How many complaint regarding delay in delivery and mis-representation? -- I think this should be the main concern for used car Buyers. 3. Overall, how many transaction done for used car, compared to 2,438 complaint ( or only 1,084 ) to have a better overview of the situation? Seems like still many unanswered / transparent clarification.
Damon-_- 1st Gear October 22, 2013 Share October 22, 2013 There's always demand and supply for goods that are deem desirable that is why dealers/ brokers/ agents are there for. Naturally arguments and misinterpretation will arise from time to time. Be it dealers or consumers everyone got to do their duties. Dealers being for profit should work for the money they want to earn providing support and being truthful in all dealings where reputation can be everything more than profit. In our local context we are referring to case-trust accredited. Consumers should also be more attentive when hunting for cars. Homework needs to be done too, do not be too trusting check and check for all items promise and are delivered. More often the case for complaint they are more towards errant dealers who uses the same tricks over and over again such as the following. 1) Pricing their vehicle lower than market value thus enticing buyers to contact and make a trip down. (Note that this is the very first point of contact) 2) sold the vehicle to multiple buyer, forfeiting deposit forcibly which explains for the rise in complaints. (This is plain evil) 3) Send for evaluation before committing, please take note all used car will have wear and tear therefore things are more important such as engine/ transmission and signs of repairs. 4) Don't be stingy and calculate cents and dollars so much so you miss the nicer (Low mileage, agent service, warranty available) cars which normally price more. 5) Dealers who are one/two man show please exercise cautious because you never know you will find them again.
Passion 5th Gear October 23, 2013 Share October 23, 2013 The article said CASE will take action . What action can they take when there isn't law on take deposit and forfeit deposit and don't deliver on time with so many fine print?

Seems like still many unanswered / transparent clarification. 1. Because many people were unclear what the "Lemon Law" was and contacted CASE. These count as a complaint.
