German auto giant Volkswagen AG on Thursday said it is recalling 2.6 million cars worldwide due to various technical problems affecting different models of its various brands.

The problems ranged from faulty lighting, leaky engine fuel lines and possible malfunction when synthetic oil is used in its gearbox, a spokesman said.
The recall is one of the biggest in the company’s history. It includes 800,000 of its compact Tiguan sports utility vehicles (SUV), which could be affected by faulty fuses that can trip lighting circuits. Volkswagen also said it is recalling its two-litre Amarok pickup truck because of leaky engine fuel lines, which affects 239,000 vehicles.
VW issued a separate recall in China for around 640,000 vehicles that were locally produced or imported between January 2009 and June 2013. The recall comes after the country’s quality watchdog identified a problem with the DO200 gearbox, which may suffer electronic malfunction when synthetic oil is used.

PRESS RELEASE

Volkswagen recalls Tiguan for fuse exchange

• Some of the vehicle lights could fail on the Tiguan

• Gearbox oil change with vehicles with DQ200 gearboxes

Wolfsburg, 14th November 2013 -- Within the framework of the continuous monitoring of vehicles in the field, Quality Assurance at Volkswagen AG has found that, in isolated cases, a fuse may trip in the Tiguan, thus resulting in failure of one of the two vehicle light circuits. This in turn causes individual light functions to fail. However, the vehicle's electric circuitry ensures that some lights remain on all around the vehicle. The driver is immediately informed of this on the instrument cluster. Replacing the fuse with one with a tougher surface coating only takes a few minutes. Approximately 800,000 vehicles, which includes 147.000 vehicles in the German market, built between the beginning of 2008 and the middle of 2011, are affected by this global campaign. The relevant vehicle owners will be informed by Volkswagen accordingly.

Within the framework of further quality monitoring in China and Southeast Asia, it has been discovered that, with vehicles with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200), electric malfunctions could occur in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used. This applies in particular if the vehicle is subject to a hot and humid climate, coupled with a high proportion of stop & go driving.

Studies have established that using of mineral oil will rectify this problem. To continue to ensure customer satisfaction amongst DSG, Volkswagen has decided to launch global voluntary campaign and to request all customers with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200) filled with synthetic oil to visit a workshop for an oil exchange. The vehicle owners will be informed by Volkswagen accordingly

"This isn't a VW-specific problem, it's one of the things that happen at mass-market carmakers," Frank Schwope, a Hanover, Germany-based analyst at Nord LB, said. "Costs will probably be in the high double-digit or even triple-digit million euro range. They might be partly shared with suppliers involved, but they still make VW's full-year earnings target more difficult to reach."

They went for quantity & not quality.....sounds familiar....

They swept it under the carpet for too long, so now....

They tried to cover a fire with paper & were in self denial for too along.....

fuel lines & lighting also kana.....gosh. But no no no, the SG models are not affected. Everything under control & but to err on the side of caution, AD is closely monitoring the situation...

Sex-pose to VW... finally they acknowledged the 7-speed gearbox problem, well I guess no car is superior now... entry continental car also having problem...

But to give them credit, they may not be in denial, they may be trying to identify the solutions because keep changing gearbox is high cost for them.

Assuming Miner oil solves it, what are the trade off?

More freq oil change? and more drag since min oil is thicker....lose some pick up & fc?. Further Min oil will break down fast under hot humid start stop conditions ?

Many qns remains unsolved regarding the DSG... is there permanent damage to the gearbox after cust use syn oil?

But they sounds like there will not be perm damage to the DSG, as they only offer to change the oil?!?!? Hmmmm....

I think many first owners already sold the cars.

Ya but still a lot of VW on the road... this also goes to show though a lot of VW on road doesn't = no problem / trying to tarnish VW. Every now and then there will be problem with any car brands on the road unless they stick to manufacturing parts on their own and not outsource then assembled...

All brands will have their share of issues. Its a matter of how extensive & whether the corp is willing to take responsibility or they try to taiji. When the DSG surfaced in China 4-5 yrs back.......over here still denying all the way. Only when it was a Global issue, then here admit. What to do ? Willing buyer, willing seller...
