Watched Captain Phillips over the weekends.

I'd recommend this movie to those who like thriller "kan cheong" movies like those from Danzel Washington. It stars Tom Hanks.

Roughly, the plot is about a cargo ship that was hijacked off the coast of Somalia by pirates and how the Captain (called Richard Phillips) and it's crew was rescued by the US Navy of CTF 151.

It's about 2 hours. The built up of the movie right from the start, to tension of the rescue was topnotched. But it's the enpowering ending scene which blows the movie away. Tom Hank's acting was topnotch. The somali Pirates are not bad actors too.

Another scene worth mentioning that most people overlook is the start scene where Phillips converse with his wife.

There are abit of contravosy on the accuracy of the movie but after I did the research, I'd say 80% is accurate of what happen and some are altered for dramatic reasons.

4/5 for me

The original crew was quite piss..they claimed that Philips was no hero.

I think the crew actually sue the company and Philips after the incident.

Anyway, I also feel like watching it not for hanks, but for the performance of the pirate leader. People said the guy is good

Yah nice movie indeed, surprised they didnt even have a single shot gun or pistol aboard.

Love how the captain navigate the ship to steer awa the pirates. surprised to see water gun all round. And also usa navy so cool. The snipers really look pro and if those pirates not so greedy they wouldnt be dead or captured

Finally that skinny guy going to america haha

No way crews on on board ships are allowed to carry weapons. It's against the law.

I haven't watch the show. But I know the crew could use high pressure water to hose down pirates. If the pirates carry rifles, it's no point to resist.

There are security companies who provide escort service for ships traveling in pirate infested waters.

Yup the crew sued The company. Did I'm not sure if they sued Phillip. Phillip did sue the company too.

Actually the movie didn't claimed him as the hero too and potrait that the crew didn't really like him too. You can feel the tension between the crew and him even before the hijack happened. my guess is he may be quite an arse.

more spoilers

And he had countlessly ignored the piracy warning from the emails and disregard the safety distance thus endangering the crew and attracted the pirates. That is accurately depicited in the movie.

I think those who wanna watch it better do it soon. Think some cinemas are not showing it already.

I will go watch today if not tomorrow.

is it used as a defensive weapon?

No. It is for fire fighting purpose. But seafarers use it as defensive weapons. A fire pump is rated to produce 12bars of pressure, thus the water from the fire hose is powerful enough as a deterrence against small crafts.

oic. why can't they make this water pump movable like a gun turret so that it can aim at the aggressor?

These are called fire monitors. Only those ships with fire fighting notation require the installation of such fire monitors. It is not cheap, in the range of few hundred thousand. The size of the pump for these fire monitors are bigger than your car engines. They are usually coupled to the main engine of the vessel with a gearbox.

The fire monitors itself are either electric or hydraulic powered for its movement. Nowadays, most moving towards electric powered.

The pirates are armed. So when they fired, the crew would be defenceless much less manning the water pumps.
