Stay strong. Investing in your health is one of the most worthwhile things to do. Like studying, don't cramp everything into a short period of time. Treat it like savings, every day do a bit and every effort you make, you will yield the reward. Set realistic targets and think long term. Good luck.

Lala81 Hypersonic April 1, 2017 Share April 1, 2017 (edited) Well I'm a sufferer too and recently started CPAP on my own... So I'm updating this thread as it is a bit piece meal. So i'll try to condense this properly. https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/sleepapnea What is Sleep apnoea? Sleep apnea (AP-ne-ah) is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. How do i tell if I have sleep apnoea? The quality of your sleep is poor, which makes you tired during the day. Sleep apnea is a leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. Usually you will complain of feeling tired in the day or feeling of incomplete rest even after a good sleep. Personally I know cos i wake up multiple times in the night, especially once coming to early morning. I also can't sleep on my back/supine because of sleep apnoea. I will self awaken and change position. I also have frequent headaches because of this. There's screening questionnaires like this. eg. STOP BANG https://www.sleepassociation.org/sleep-apnea-screening-questionnaire-stop-bang/ What are the side effects of sleep apnoea Long list. If severe enough, it increases your risk of hypertension, also it may increase your risk of heart attacks/stroke. Sleep deprivation also affects your memory etc. Personally, when i sleep better, I stop getting headaches so easily (I'm having one currently cos last night wasn't a good night). It also improves my temper. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-apnea/basics/complications/con-20020286 How to diagnose? If you have no insurance, i guess you can see your polyclinic doctor to get referral to a specialist. You have to be seen by a specialist, usually ENT but sometimes Respiratory medicine specialists also deal with apnoea. Physical examination by ENT to see if you benefit from surgery. And also a sleep study to confirm how bad your sleep apnoea is. Usually the thing measured at sleep studies is this index called AHI. The higher, the worse it is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apnea%E2%80%93hypopnea_index How to diagnose? Ender Hypersonic April 1, 2017 Share April 1, 2017 Which type specialist to see for Sleep Apnea? Recently talked to my son's dentist, he mentioned he partner with a jaw surgeon are also specialised in treating Sleep Apnea, and can us refer for the testing and then consultation. I though ENT specialist are the ones we go to for this problem.

Though for some cases, jaw surgery maybe indicated.
mersaylee Supersonic April 1, 2017 Share April 1, 2017 Nope. Asthma is not related to sleep apnoea Thanks. Reason I've asked is because my wife who's asthmatic exhibits those symptoms... she knows they are not related though and I'm the one ignorant one. She needs constant wind from the fan in her face in order to sleep well. Otherwise, she could wake up several times a night feeling breathless. She's tried beclomethasone dipropionate inhaler but disliked the dry mouth side effect. ↡ Advertisement
