Our public transport system is really still very good.

Here’s an article by Mr David Mason, an ‘ang moh’, who lives and works in Singapore for several months a year. He’s been here for so many years that he even remembers what public transport was like in the days before the MRT was built, and when there was no air-con on public buses *gasp!*

Singapore’s come a long way, now there’s integrated transport hubs, sheltered link ways. And much of our public transport system now cater to those who are less mobile, e.g. wheelchair accessible public buses, green man plus which gives more ‘green time’ to seniors and those with disabilities. Our public transport system isn’t perfect and there’s the occasional hiccups, but compared to many places around the world, it’s really still ‘very good’.

i think few doubt the beneficial qualities of what MRT has given to Singapore, just that in recent years, the company becomes over-focused on profits and revenues, and neglects the quality standards, the customer service and the maintenance of their trains

everyone used to be very impressed with the MRT during the early days

I agree 100% with the article. I remember the non-ac buses as well and its fantastic how much things have improved.

Yes there are breakdowns, but where doesn't it. It was a common occurrence with the Tube when I used to go to Uni in London.

Any issues now is really a First World problem. But its a hassle for a lot of people so the govt. should be proactive about these things (extensions of lines, capacity, etc)

No doubt having all these bonus such as sheltered walkway, wheelchair accesible buses etc is good. But the most important part of public transport is getting passengers from point A to B on schedule, which most of the buses here cannot achieve.

You know why we don't have a published bus timetable for our buses, like what other 1st world cities have? Because the operators know they can't keep to it.

"Whack the seat" before sitting down. This is something I have not seen for a long time. The younger generation may not know of this strange habits of bus commuters in the past.

my late grandmother used to remind me to whack the warm seat when the other party stood up to leave before sitting down

this is so that we do not get piles

Good article and I don't dispute the benefits the MRT has brought and the quality of the MRT compared with counterparts in other countries.

However, this is the very nagging drawback of the current ruling system. They love patting themselves on the back for a job that COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER! Complacency only leads to deterioration and this is the perfect example. Instead of patting themselves on the back for a job done to "satisfactory" standard, they should be more critical of themselves and ask where and what can be done to further improve the system.

The great and mighty MRT was the brainchild of the people's President

Although it was built in a time when there was no need for it, it was meant for later generations

When it was built, it served as the backbone of human transportation in Singapore. It was the crown jewel of Singapore

but lust for profits meant that maintenance was not up to standard and hardly a week goes by without a fault

When Singaporeans take the MRT, they need to remember the roots and origin of the MRT. Who fought for it. Who built it. Who opposed it [rolleyes]

First they were in their dreams thinking PTS is "First World", after so many negative coverage down to "still very good"... but I have never seen an article that really highlight the root cause...

No one dares to step on that "minefield" to report... Forsaking maintenance for profit... Forsaking service for profit... Poor foresight and yet getting profit... ULTIMATE PTS - drop 40% profit ask for price increase without service improvement... can't they keep profit at 45% yearly instead of expecting profit to INCREASE EVERY YEAR? Don't forget they are PTS (Public Transport System NOT PRIVATE TRANSPORT SYSTEM)...

Not really, he is just reporting what the COI had discovered. If you read today's ST, he is playing down his criticism on SMRT.

He just "challenged" a senior civil service officer: no breakdown which is more than 30 mins for the next 6 months.
