He is a close friend of mine and only sells top range new vehicles. His advice is actually do not even get a car unless I need it.

 

I am aware of how those dealers swing to the same hymn sheet when they need to offload.

you have to understand the mentality of a dealer.

 

to them cars that sell by volume, sell fast, minimal hassle is the most preferred car. I have never met a dealer that recommends you go for the less commonly demanded cars although it can save you say 5-10 grands on the purchase price.

Bro, I also like Saab cars. But recently, I found out that a friend who worked for Trans Eurokars bought himself a second hand Saab. So I thought: This guy must knows the make, he is in the car industry, he knows how to pick a good second hand Saab, so everything should be ok for him. The truth is that his Saab is visiting the workshop ever so often. Since an industry insider like him still cannot get a good reliable buy, I better give up on this make. So you better go in with both eyes wide open.

so did your friend do a PPI ? What exactly caused car to visit wkshop often? same problem or multiple?

coming from a owner myself, my saab visit less often than my ex honda. Even the workshop boss sees me and commented: How time no see....

Going in with both eyes open, that's why I need a pre-purchase inspection done. So I have some idea of what work is going to need to be done. Any recommendations for a reliable and trustworthy workshop appreciated.

My Saab 9-5 was problem free too, other than a blown headlight bulb. : )

Saab cars are generally reliable when it comes to the engine and gearbox. Hardly any issues with it. The more common problems with a Saab is the fuel pump and cooling fan parts which seems to commonly manifest during the 5th and 6th yr ownership but that can be easily repaired by some of the workshops that specialises in Saab repair. Other than that, not much issues.

Interesting to chance upon this topic. After owning 5 different SAABs, all i can say is that if you take care of the SAAB ... It will take care of you all the way. I say it with hand on heart. After 13 years, i have never had the SAAB leave me stranded by the roadside ever or have any major hiccups. I have had my fair share of 9-5s and 9-3s to attest to what i have mentioned.

 

Any naysayers of SAAB and reliability has been said countless times and well all i can say is that most of the Saabs that i have seen broken down at the workshop are because of shoddy and dubious maintenance with long overdue oil changes and all. Mind you, the service interval officially in the manual is 15,000km but as with most singaporeans, we do oil change at 10,000km or less for those that are more particular about the longevity of their turbo engines.

 

The gearboxes are made by AISIN (Toyota) and they can use Toyota Type IV gearbox oil which can be purchased afford-ably at any stockist. Aircon also japanese by SANDEN (Found in Hondas also) so no problematic air con issues as with most contis as they age.

 

Those SAAB overheat issues are mainly related to the 2.8 V6 engines as the engine bay is inevitably more cramped compared to the 2.0L. I don't hear 2.0L having such issues with heat even on tuned engines exceeding 300+ horses.

 

All i can say is, look for one with decent servicing history and it is more value and fun than any BMW or Merc of the same vintage and engine capacity. If badge value is of little concern to you, i'd highly recommend you give the Swede Jet a shot and you be the judge.

I saw the channel 8 artiste Kym Ng with her Saab 93 2.0 Cabriolet at the petrol station near my house recently. She started with Saab after being appointed as the Saab ambassador almost 10 yrs back when Transeurokars was still actively promoting this brand. Apparently she is so impressed with the drive that she continues to drive Saab till today even after her contract as Saab ambassador ended.

I think she just got her 93 cabriolet not long ago. Cause recently i saw a news article interview with her that she's changing her ride soon, and is interested in getting a cabrio because she sat in pornsak's cabrio and found cabrio very attractive. Haha, i didnt knew she was a Saab ambassador back then.
