A new font called Burlingame has been hailed as the safest dashboard font ever produced by scientists.

According to researchers at MIT, the font is highly legible by scientific standards, compared with previous fonts used in vehicles.

During their research, scientists compared different typefaces in simulated driving situations, in order to determine which letter shapes and spacing reduced the driver's glance time.

Steve Matteson, who took part in the MIT AgeLab study, told Fast Company: "Truthfully there haven't been any good scientific studies to prove what we consider our trade craft, our intuition as designers that makes things legible.

"We worked with MIT to basically test typefaces side by side to figure out which ones were legible and try to figure out why they are legible.”

Basically "Monotype" typefaces used to increase on it's legibility for the user for quick glance it doesn't reduce accident rate.

To reduce accident rate on the road is when the drivers keeps their eyes on the road at all times because by not keeping their eyes on the road, its equivalent to blind driving which is the root of accidents.

Like speed traps are dangerous as drivers will tend to look out for them at overhead bridges and under trees rather to look out on the road right.

"This is a sort of landslide on a much more extreme and special form of development that is going to happen with vehicles," Crossgrove explained. "The way a car operates and the way people communicate with their cars is a different thing. This also illustrated the importance of using a font in those settings, as in other more critical settings it would get even greater use. The threat from drivers is now in the minds of many men, "he said.

In other words, the time to parse a new typeface is set. Burlingame, it's time. Crafted at Monotype by Crossgrove, Burlingame can be read according to science criteria unlike Eurostile.

The MIT research compared multiple typefaces to define which letter shapes and distance minimize the look time in simulated driving scenarios.
Font designers had ideas and hypotheses about the readability of a font, but never had their theories evaluated before. Steve Matteson, the artistic style director at Monotype and a participant in the MIT AgeLab workshop, told Quick Company, "Without strong science research to show what we see our trade craft and our instincts as designers make things legible." "It was primarily with MIT that we worked to check typefaces side by side in order to determine those are readable and see why they are readable."
