Ahgong Supercharged April 30, 2014 Share April 30, 2014 read this article. quite an interesting one. http://tinyurl.com/kfd896r the context is in America, but IMO it is really relevant to our local scene as well. the paragraph that struck me are as follows: "How many poor inner-city kids could be brilliant computer programmers if given the chance? Probably a lot. Uneducated people can do amazing things when given the chance. Two years ago, a foundation left a crate of tablets for kids in an Ethiopian village. As The Registerreports, "within five months, they had hacked Android." " "You don't get to pick your parents, but your parents' income has a huge impact on your educational attainment, and hence your future income. I don't know why that is – it's likely a mix of cost and culture -- but it's true. And as long as it's true, a large portion of an average person's income is tied to something they have no control over." "how many people are in positions of power – CEOs, managers, bankers, regulators, and politicians –not because they're gifted, but because their parents were able to provide a great education?" wow... question is, how do we get out of that rut if we have parents that are in the lower spectrum of the salary scale? ↡ Advertisement

Evillusion Supersonic April 30, 2014 Share April 30, 2014 No doubt everybody wants a rich or well-to-do family. But i doubt i can be like myself now if i had those kind of parents! I oni see many kids from those families that is snobbish, rude, selfish and thinks that everything revolve around them....even the sun! I will concur if the article says should each child is given the same opportunities.....the outcome maybe different!

Deividz 5th Gear April 30, 2014 Share April 30, 2014 Yes and No. I feel the key is your parents' attitude to education. My wife's parents earned less than 4k combined. My parents around 12k before my Dad got retrenched. My wife got triple As and got into NUS while I barely made it to the local U. Phew, thank God no foreign influx yet at that time. In summary, we are both earning a decent salary now.

I can only give them that much.

Jajoba123 3rd Gear April 30, 2014 Share April 30, 2014 i concurred. but the kidz must be educated on the carrots n stick first. especially i was not the so bright student when schoolings n family is not well to do. dad bankrupt rely on mum's little earning. no carrot, n no drive to work hard in my academic. one need to be guided to understand the environment around us. is hard for a guy like me then to understand the world. ↡ Advertisement
