Correct way of driving auto gearbox?

just wanna find out if it is a common thing to experience the "gong" sound when engaging 'D' from park ?

 

i just thought this would shorten the gears lifespan. is there a better way to prevent this from happening?

The video is saying to do this in the sequence.

 

1 step foot brake

2 pull handbrake

3 switch off engine

4 put auto gear lever to Park

 

Will try to adopt this.

You can just do it this way:

 

1. Step on brake, real hard.

2. Put to Neutral gear.

3. Pull up hand/parking brake.

4. Put gear to P.

 

The video is saying to do this in the sequence.

I do this:

1. Put to P

2. Pull handbrake.

3. Off engine.

 

Sometimes, when I start the car and engage D, I will hear the "gong" sound. Especially if I parked on a slope. After 8 years, GB is still working well.

My current 8yr old car got this gong sound once a while when shifting out of P even on flat ground (normally after reverse park)... ever since i try the method some bro here mentioned put to N 1st then go straight to P fast and indeed the gong sound nvr happen again. However dont know if this is correct a not.

1) don't engage R/D while the car is still moving in opposite direction.

 

2) don't hesist to drive off from still position

 

3) don't shift to N if stop for a short while (5mins or less)

 

4) when parking, step brake, pull hand brake, put to P, slowly release foot brake.

 

5) don't use gas to hold car at slope.

Always use brake to hold.

 

Even for me doing all these, my CVT GB kaput after 20,000km (first gen honda fit).

But it lasted for 240,000 before I trade the car.

GB kaput maybe due to constantly loading vehicle with 5 pax.

Had a Sunny for 10 yrs and a Toyota Wish 9 yrs ; both clocking over 200,000 km with no autotrans issue . Autotrans fluid changed every 50k.This is what I practise :-

 

1)Leave in D ( instead of putting to N ) during short stops eg at traffic lights. Minimises gear engagement.

 

2)Never never ever put to N while coasting to a stop. You can do that for a manual but not auto.

 

3) When parking at slope, let the brakes hold the car instead of the gearbox.

i) After stopping,with foot still on brake pedal, put to N, then engage parking brake.

ii)Release foot from brake pedal. You should feel some movement when the car is now held by the parking brake.

iii)Step on brake pedal again and put to P

iv)Off engine.

 

If the car is held by brakes instead of gearbox on slope, it is easier to shift from P to R or D the next time you want to drive off. And I hate it when valets simply put to P without engaging the parking brake when handing over the car to you.

i think ur CVT GB kaput is due to the GB is not a good one... a good condition one will last you if you maintain regularly!

now with electric handbrake, must press P first then can pull handbrake

if you pull handbrake, it will automatically shift to P

I nvr have gong sound when i m d driver.

 

I always:

1. Step on brake;

2. Shift to N;

3. Pull handbrake

4. Leg off brake

5. Off engine

6. Shift to P

 

Nowadays, i need to swap 5 & 6.

Why swop 5 and 6? The TV report says put to P is the last step, after off engine, that way then can increase lifespan of the gearbox leh.

 

This is a very useful thread, I have been very unnerved by the gong sound all this time, esp when change gear and move off on slope, now I must really try to take care.

Do you mean switch gear very fast from N to P? Sorry, I not very clear about what you saying.

I have been doing that (N-Hand brake-Off Engine-Park) for years, on the good advice of a trusted mechanic. Not sure if it actually prolongs the lifespan of the GB.

 

I put gear to N at traffic light too.

 

Was also told to switch off aircon before switching off engine and to switch on aircon only after engine has warmed up (ie. morning routine: start engine, drive off, switch on aircon after approximately 3 mins).

I think the reason they say pull handbrake and release footbrake before putting to P is because if you put to P first the stress of holding the car is on the gearbox and not the brakes and it might cause damage to the gearbox.

I can't off engine if P is not engaged. Since load of car has shifted to hand brake, it is ok to shift to P.

I am not a guru, but I think that should not be. Normally you should already be able to off engine when in neutral, just that you cannot take out key until P engaged. Otherwise how to tow car when cannot start. I think by moving the key to just before start engine, gear can move out of P already.

 

I can't off engine if P is not engaged. Since load of car has shifted to hand brake, it is ok to shift to P.
