Anyone come across this device called Power Star? It claims to cut monthly electric bill by 30%. Anyone using? Does its work or just snake oil? Please share. Thanks!

Don't believe too much.

If it really works, every household would have one already.

These kind of power saving product always make the same claim.

 

1. Your energy usage is inefficient. Power factor less than 1. So you have "lost" energy which PS bills you.

This is due to motor usage like aircon compressors, vacuum cleaners, etc.

 

2. Their product are usually capacitors use to correct power factor nearer to 1.

 

Some people say, your power or watt meter may not even read kW (real heating value), it may be reading kVA, which is not affected by any pf correction.

 

For any pf correction you do, you are only helping the PS, but not getting any change back.

Same claim they use for voltage stabilizer for car.

It's just a bunch of over-priced capacitors they are selling you in a pretty box.
