To fix or not - bushings & suspension

Am on a 2007 sylphy 2.0. Recently feeling vibrations and some noise from the ride. Took it to my regular mechanic.

Recommended to change undercarriage bushing, front lower arm/front cross member assembly, all absorbers, front top insulator, front rubber cover, plus additional alignment, incl labour is $2.1K.

A/ Is this a decent rate, he's assured me it's all genuine parts, and has been doing good work for me for the past few years

B/ Is it worth changing, or should I change the car?

If you have experience in this aspect, pls share.

If this is the first major mechanical wear-and-tear problem that you are encountering since 2007, I think it's a justifiable cost to pay to retain the car. Personally, I would replace the car only if this is just one in a series of expensive repairs/replacements that you have done on the car over the years/months.

I have previously paid close to $1k just for replacement of a pair of front lower arm. It was for a different car brand/make though. So you have to make your own judgement if S$2.1k in your case is reasonable. Best is just get a few more quotes from different workshops if you can spare the time.

My car may be different but here are the sum.

Car making noise on the front.

Bought the lower bushings, cost about $100 for both front.

Paid workshop for labour, probably another $100.

Went for wheel alignment, $50. Shop says noise from shock absorbers.

Bought 2 sets of Bilstein front shock absorbers $100 each.

Tried to get ws to replace, but they were too busy. End up diy.

Another wheel alignment, another $50.

Now, if you were to replace lower arm bushings and shock absorbers all at the same time, my guess is that a fair deal would be about $1k including wheel alignment and labour.

Any more parts would start to add up, probably another couple of hundreds.

WS need to make money, so yeah, throw in another $500.

Or maybe you should find an alternative ws.

To sum up, all shock absorbers, bushings and related parts would probably cost around $800~$1k,

Wheel alignment is $50~$70 depending on which shop is doing it.

The rest are labour cost. Shouldn't hit $500 imo.

Go JB workshop. I can quite confirm will save you at least 30-40% of this amount.

Buy yr own parts and go JB to do, probably another 10%.

Not wise to sell yr car as the current condition will not fetch a gd price either.

Great advice & cheapest option, if you can navigate this 'DIY' in JB; easily 50% cheaper.

2nd cheapest is buy parts in SIng and repair in Sing.

3rd cheapest is pass car to mechanic in Sing to fix.

4th cheapest is change car.

Hi Bro. For your repairs, i can safely say the labour won't exceed 400 RM and I'm being conservative.

This is my routine.

Reach workshop 10 am

Tebaru city 10.30 am

Massage 3 pm

Collect car 6 pm

I can share my contact but it will be wise to pre-book.

Location is at Johor Jaya Rosmerah - 10 minutes away from Tebrau city.

He's very honest and thus has alot of customers compared to the workshops in the vicinity.

NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED with service and PRICING.

I dare to share now as he cannot do my conti car.

E.g. rotation and alignment front & back - 60 RM.

Diy not so easy. Need quite a few specialized tools.

I'm lucky to use my fren's workshop space.

Tools needed:

1. Jack, jack stand

2. Air gun - if no air gun, you might need breaker bar. 1/2" drive

3. Shock absorber is a bit of pain, it spins when you try to unlock or lock the nut, so you need something to hold it from spinning.

4. Various size sockets depending on your struts

5. List of parts you need to buy and buy them, shock absorbers, bearings, rubber cage, bump stop, etc. Spring is usually ok, no need to change unless damaged.

6. Spring compressor

7. Schooled in youtube [laugh]

Generally, the instructions:

1. Jack up car, put on jack stand

2. Remove tyres

3. Loosen two bolts on the struts

4. Loosen top bolts

5. Disconnect brake hose attached to the struts

6. Remove struts

7. Use spring compressor to compress spring

8. Remove shock absorber, note all the position of the top parts, bump stop, bearings, etc.

9. Installation is the reverse.
