Suspension upgrade

Dear suspension gurus,

asking on behalf of a fellow friend, he has a current c class 1.8 turbo.

ride on lowered eibach springs only, shock absorbers are standard MB items. tires are on 35 profile 19 incher BBS rims

ride is not so good and harsh over Singapore roads, was thinking how to 'soften' the ride quality without reverting back to stock. will changing to good absorbers help?

Generally once you lower the car, the ride comfort will deteriorate.

Since your friend only did the springs, the current shocks will probably not last long.

Ask your friend to check the tires for correct pressure. I've found that with lower profile tires, slightly higher pressure helps in comfort.

I would not suggest changing the shocks. Your best bet would be to go for Bilstein coilovers.

Wouldn't changing to Bilsteins cause his ride to be more if not as harsh as it already is.

My current coilovers also have adjustable damping.

But even at the softest softest, is still damn harsh. Go over hump at 15kmh, everything in boot will bounce.

Bilstein coilovers have adjustible hardness settings, so the user can adjust to his preferred level [bounce2] or [bounce1] .

The only way to fix it is w/ coilovers. Right now, his spring rate increase by a lot so that's why uncomfortable. With coilovers, you can adjust the spring preload and for more ex ones, damper rates also.

I think whatever damper or shock absorbed used the ride will be harsh. Lowering the car means less travel for the damper. The low profile tire makes it even more worse as it has less tire wall to flex.

Better tell your friend to be extra careful when driving in the wet.

Yes, same here, but I'm not on Bilsteins. I don't suppose you are.

A number of others who have used them, say they are the best.

I won't say mine are "damn harsh", but certainly harder than stock.

There is always a trade off when you lower, but it looks and handles much better than stock.

I find myself avoiding humps and potholes and going real slow over humps, but its a trade off I'm willing to make.

thanks everyone for the advice, I shall advice him for the coilovers then. suspension is fine, only change 2 yrs into warranty as shock abosrbers gave up on the lower spring rate.

any good brands and what to look out for while changing coilovers?

Just to share. My current Jap hatch is on Ohlins DFV coilover. If set at 10 clicks ( max is 29 clicks), it's even more comfy than stock. So maybe it will be the same for Merc, can try

My thoughts, if his aftermarket lowering spring is of some better spec than getting a Bilsteins B8 absorber to pair with it will be perfect n without hvg to spent on a new set of coilovers. Stock absorber r longer therefore once u use lowering spring it will make the ride not so coordinated n absorber will be gone soon.

Unless he wants a good set of coilovers can consider wat the rest of the Mates recommend Bilsteins like PSS10, n KW V3 also will do the trick but for sure it will not be like the stock soft comfy ride ya.

Cheers 😀

I experienced the same sensation, and the car was too low. I just raised the car by 15mm(F)/10mm® and its much more bearable now. The car still has a lowered look, but the ride improved a lot. I suggest you try raising a little and see how it affects your ride. [;)]

I am running 20s with 30 profile and also on H & R springs with stock MB absorbers on a W212. Ride comfort still ok.

Changing to coilovers will kill ur comfort. The Bilsteins might be your friend's best bet.
