Ahgong Supercharged July 31, 2014 Share July 31, 2014 so does this mean red plate is gonna be scraped? why so happy it is scraped? this will mean those red plate drivers are driving normal plates in future. worse rite? cannot differentiate between the two liow. I cannot deny tht I am very very happy to read this!!! wohoooo!!! Red-plated off-peak cars lose shine with pricey COEs Fewer weekend cars registered as cost of ownership rises: Experts PUBLISHED ON JUL 29, 2014 7:25 AM 152 403 0 0PRINTEMAIL Only 61 new off-peak cars were registered in the first six months of this year, down from 81 in the same period last year and 304 in 2012. -- PHOTO: BERITA HARIAN FILE BY ROYSTON SIM The population of red-plated off-peak cars has fallen by nearly a fifth in the last four years as the increased costs of owning a car have made them less of a draw. Land Transport Authority (LTA) figures showed that there were 40,438 off-peak cars as at June this year, from 50,040 in December 2010. Only 61 new off-peak cars were registered in the first six months of this year, down from 81 in the same period last year and 304 in 2012. Experts said the scheme, which offers rebates but restricts cars from the road between 7am and 7pm on weekdays, has to be revised to be attractive. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/transport/story/red-plated-peak-cars-lose-shine-pricey-coes-20140729#sthash.gbzMTQoN.dpuf no wonder i see my carpark like more empty le...less of those draculas around........ and ahem...even when i was driving arnd the holiday wknd, less of them, noticably so ↡ Advertisement

Mr_b20 6th Gear July 31, 2014 Share July 31, 2014 if OPC rebate is peg to a certain % of the COE price at time of registration, I think it will be much more sustainable.

Those who want to go for a less expensive option can consider Off-Peak Cars. Mr Lim Biow Chuan suggested doing more to promote them. Today, owners who wish to use their Off-Peak Car during the restricted hours have to pay $20 for an electronic day licence, regardless of whether they use it for just half an hour or the full 12 hours. We will review the feasibility of making the scheme more flexible and attractive when the technology is available. ahhh... so they have not found the way to catch us yet. now we wait~! Banz86 5th Gear August 1, 2014 Share August 1, 2014 Haha yah I agree. So not worth getting fined cos our government agencies are very good at collecting them. The fines are so high, what's a few bucks spent to avoid them.
smgdc Clutched October 16, 2015 Share October 16, 2015 Hi, Sorry to ask this in an old thread. Like to ask, how do we buy an off-peak car? Is it same as per buying normal car, except tell the sales rep that I want it to be off-peak? Any difficulty in securing COE for off-peak cars? For the $17,000 rebate, does it mean the car will be cheaper by $17,000 upfront? Thank you.

Securing COE same as other buyers or normal cars, no difference. Rebate is upfront, so is car price minus 17k. you pay less upfront. LPPL 6th Gear June 10, 2016 Share June 10, 2016 (edited) I have a friend that drives a VW OPC. To me it is really dumb paying more than 80k for a car that you can only drive after 7pm and on weekends. It is like owning half of the car just to save on the 17k. In fact 17k spread over 10 years is quite negligible but can you imagine the amount of inconvenience that 17k less would cost you over 10 years? On your off days you need to pay $20 each time to use the car in the day, macham like paying the government to rent your own car.
