Reminds me of NASA spending millions to develop a pen that could be used in space, while the Russians used pencils!

Height sensors go up in Bukit Timah Road to warn drivers of tall vehicles

By Christopher Tan

SINGAPORE - Sensors that warn drivers of tall vehicles that they cannot pass under an overhead structure will be tested along Upper Bukit Timah.

When the system senses an approaching vehicle that is too tall, it will start flashing a visual warning to alert the driver that his vehicle may hit the structure.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA), which set up the system, said it will try this out for six months and gauge its effectiveness before rolling it out to more locations.

The LTA said incidents involving vehicles hitting overhead structures are relatively low but added that a damaged overhead road structure can pose grave danger to all road users.

Just build an overhead structure with plastic chains or other noisemakers hanging down to the height limit.

Cheap warning device that is simple to upkeep.

On the other hand, sensors are prone to reliability problems, and also consume electrical power.

Yeap, just simple metal poles will do.

Any driver hitting them will know.

But as usual LTA like to spend money on complicated technology to fix simple things.

So they look like they are working...

My proposed Fully Integrated, All Weather, Low Maintenance, Height Detection cum Warning System:

You can convert it to a Overhead Structure Collision Prevention System by replacing the warning sign with a big hammer and swing it towards the truck cabin. The [sleeping] driver is not going to miss the warning!

How about having overhead bridge sensors that show motorist from far that there is a TP with camera there.?

TP will no do this, cos they need to receive their year-end bonus package mah...

Er.. no matter how high tech, if the driver is not paying attention to the road, also LPPL..

waste time, waste money... -_-

Yar boy. Just look at the bus that steers into wrong lane. Motorbike so big in front of him, he still can bang the bike, haiz....

Cannot, scholars must think high tech to prove their worth.

And what will the warning be like, if the sensor is triggered?

A warning message in English, just like the expressway information LED signboards?

Driver don't know English, how?

This is quite plausible - long ago when learning to drive, my instructor cheerfully told me that he cannot comprehend the messages flashed on the expressway signboards! [laugh]

hmm, while in some places, wished that some decent everyday pasar malam tech was planned for.......

In the spanking new NUH Medical Centre multi storey carpark, there are no overhead (red/green) indicators.

Looking for an empty lot is like the old days, haha

Thought these devices should be de-facto fitments for a building opened in 2014?

Heng ah if got warning message on the spot......

Wait they send a letter to inform you of the height breech in '3 working days'.... [sweatdrop]
