It is to prevent parking and traffic problems from worsening.

SINGAPORE: The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has named seven new locations where additional eating houses will not be allowed to be set up so as to prevent the existing parking and traffic problems in the areas from worsening. This brings the number of places where new eating houses will not be approved to 18.

The new sites deemed to be problematic traffic areas are:

  1. Changi Road, which include Jalan Eunos / Still Road to Jalan Kembangan and Frankel Avenue
  2. Upper Paya Lebar Road from Lorong Ah Soo to Paya Lebar Crescent
  3. Bukit Timah Road, at Wilby Road to Elm Avenue and Anamalai Avenue to Fourth Avenue
  4. Sembawang Road - from Mandai Road to Transit Road
  5. Kampong Bahru Road to Sporttiswoode Park Road
  6. Kampong Glam
  7. Jalan Riang in the Braddell Heights area.

The URA said it has worked with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to assess the existing traffic and parking situations as part of their periodic reviews.

The agencies also took into account the concerns of residents, as well as existing tenants who want a balance of businesses in the area.

Mr Saeid Labbafi, chairman of the Kampong Glam Association, said: "What the Kampong Glam retailers wish to see is a balance between the businesses. We do know that this place is place targeted for conservation, one of the historical places in Singapore. The more time passes, the more the place becomes unique because of its rarity in the area and because of its cultures, and all this thanks to lot of help from the government. We wish to see a balance of the businesses here."

For proposed eating areas outside the existing list where food establishments can no longer be set up, URA said it will evaluate them with the LTA, for consideration of approval under its planning guidelines.

If can, build a MSCP around the areas, will solve the parking woes, and to reduce illegal parking.

If unable to, looks like this is the better interim measure now.

The areas quoted are all private freehold properties..... [sweatdrop]

If build MSCP at East Coast Road, then 'they' will lost the GRC there also ... [laugh][laugh]

Good move. Those places already have too many eating places. Traffic already slow moving. They should include kovan, where the ali shan and punggol nasi lemak is. Practically all day long the left lane is unusable. Buses need to filter to middle lane to move on.

The intention is simple...they want all makan place to rent direct from the government.... not from some property owners...

hmmm......this sounds like the online betting thingy..... [sly]

after the cameras were installed right outside Ponggol nasi lemak..I've not seen any drivers whom dare to stop/park/drop off passengers anymore..I hope more cameras can be installed island wide so it'll eradicate illegal parking/stopping/dropping off & Sinkapor can move towards a 1st world country [nod]

An old chinese saying..... loosely translated as "rather allowing officials to set fire.....just don't allow the citizens to light up a candle"...

Nope, lazy to cook + cooked foods are priced relatively cheaper than raw foods, unlike most developed countries.

For once they are doing the right thing rather than increasing cp rates or introducing COE for eateries.

Thought they will erect ERP gantry at the affected area?! Lol.
