Bullies whack kids in Malaysian boarding school

Nothing new or surprising.

Ragging or hazing has been a ritual of residential or boarding schools since the colonial days.

Seems to be an English "tradition" brought over - read "Tom Brown's schooldays"... senior students were allowed to administer corporal punishment to their juniors who were treated like servants and performed menial chores in the hostel or dorm.

Juniors united also no use. Being physically smaller, they'd likely get overwhelmed. Hostel or dorm wardens usually don't intervene as the senior students help them to keep the others in line.

Even in our local universities, there used to be some ragging in the halls of residence - all well within limits. Nowadays, kids very soft lah... In fact, the complaints here nowadays is that the 'ragging' during orientation become too sexual in nature, rather than violent [laugh]

Times has changed..such violence should never be accepted as 'tradition'. When I was in uni in the uk, our senior from our hall of residence welcome the newcomers with a party, lots of beer & laughters at the student Union.....pretty civilized.

For boarding school, there were some bullies...but never in such 'open' manner. In any case, keeping quiet and accept being bullied (or whichever names ppl call it) as ok...is never right.
