Thank you for the "LIVE" report haha. I am a east-sider, seems like it is worth to pay a visit to BIG BOX! hahaha.

Big Box opened today! Yes, today, 27 Dec 2014.

Big Box is a warehouse retail mall, located very near to Jurong East MRT station.

We decided to go check it out. It was crowded! True to its name, it felt like a huge warehouse. The most interesting was the hypermarket on the ground floor, selling goods in a warehouse concept.

Were the stuff sold at the hypermarket cheap? Not really. Some things seem a bit cheaper than say NTUC, but overall the prices were comparable. But I could be wrong. We didn't spend a lot of time in the hypermarket.

There was also huge space devoted to the sale of furniture on the 2nd the 3rd floor. It felt like Big Box wanted to compete directly with the likes of Ikea in this respect.

This was the first day of opening and things were still a bit messy. Still, this place is an interesting addition to the retail scene.

Check out the video.

Interesting. Their timing also quite good, open just before CNY so people can stock up (drinks etc).

I might head down to check out their tyres. If got good deal then might as well, right?

got tyre and rims , in the same level as the supermarket, one of the lanes . . . .

-------quoted from report -----

Big Box is poised to serve the larger Jurong community which, Ms Tong-Sng says, has about 1.2 million residents, a figure which includes those staying in Bukit Batok and Clementi. Citing market research done by the company, she adds that there is also a "mobile population of about 1.2 million people from the 2,200-odd factories in the area".

Then there is Singapore's first drive-through option for shoppers to pick up goods - only non-perishables - ordered online from the hypermarket. Drivers can head to service bays in Basement One to pick up their items, which will also be pre-packed.

Or they can buy services such as bus rides to Kuala Lumpur, music lessons for children and entrance tickets to attractions - all at discounted prices.

Customers can also buy car tyres, which can be fitted on the spot. They can check out what wheels to buy in the tyre section of the hypermarket - the first Singapore store to have this option.

Tyres from Tyres queen. Workshop opening upstairs soon. But think you still can buy and DIY the tyre change.

Went to BB over the weekend. Seems to me that the mall is still not quite ready.

1. Severe lack of cashiers -There are 3 cashier lanes unmanned for every cashier that was operating.

2. Price indicated on the display shelves and entered into the system is wrong. And I only bought 2 items loh. When I complained to the cashier how come display price and checkout price different, then she said just pay at the cashier and get the difference from customer service. Seems like they got a lot of feedback on this alrdy as her response came very fast almost like she expect me to ask. Then a fre of mine told me that he bought some stuff at less than 50% of the price, eg $10 shampoo paid only $4.50. He went back to buy another and again charged only $4.50 [lipsrsealed]

3. A lot of room along the corridors and in between shelves. Like those Aussie malls even when a lot of people you do not feel like you keep bumping into people. The items all very spaced out. Walk over to Jem and inside the shop you will feel very different

4. Another good thing is the free parking. Saw some people head straight to Jem via the bridge immediately after parking @ BB.

Personally, I prefer Fairprice over the BB as they carry Krikland stuffs that you cannot easily find in other supermarket.

Like the spaciousness while shopping and of course less people.

These kind of warehouse selling is nothing new. Last time IMM also used the same concept. Somehow it did not pick up. Guess the volume of sales does not sustain the concept. Let's see how it works this time...
