I don't quite understand why do we need supplements, If we are having a balance diet or maybe near balance diet.

I cannot remember when was the last time I took a vitamins bill or whatever liquid supplement man.

How old are you? I said the same when I was in my 20s.... hahaha....

Now I pop supplements daily and it works for me, especially in recent years, I eat the same balanced diet but don't quite have as much time as I would like to exercise (I run and swim once or twice a week). Without my supplements, I am significantly more prone to flu and cold.

I find Vit C and fish oil very effective for me. Lysine is good if you are susceptible to mouth ulcers, I however don't take it on a daily basis.

Just sharing.

I have the same sentiment...

As we grow older, our body metabolism slow down result in our belly growing bigger due to progressive stored fats

Came across L-Carnitine articles on its benefits to help burn belly fats for energy so

decide to give it a try....

I am 45.

I am the opposite, I took supplements when I was a lot younger, in my mid 20's. Can not remember when was the last time I took a supplement pill even, maybe 15 years ago..LOL

I have seen how people in villages live, and they don't take any pills. Maybe is just me, but I kind of believe in the ying yang cycle of the body, if ying yang is balance, the body stay balance. Yoga does help me a fair bit in this thought.

Having said that, I think is very individual, some takes 20-30 pills a day, some don't take a single pill in their life time, as long as one feels good about it, and thinks it work, good enough.

Just me, I don't feel good putting all those powders and drugs into my body, that's about it I guess..

Four US retailers, including GNC and Wal-Mart, accused of selling fraudulent herbal supplements

WASHINGTON - The New York state attorney general's office has accused four major retailers of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements and demanded that they remove the products from their shelves.

The investigation on supplements found in retailers GNC, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart came as a welcome surprise to health experts who have long complained about the quality and safety of dietary supplements, which are exempt from the strict regulatory oversight applied to prescription drugs, the New York Times reported.

The Food and Drug Administration has targeted individual supplements found to contain dangerous ingredients. But the announcement on Monday was the first time that a law enforcement agency had threatened the biggest retail and drugstore chains with legal action for selling what it said were deliberately misleading herbal products.

Authorities said tests conducted on herbal supplements at the four national retailers found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels. Instead, the pills labeled medicinal herbs often contained little more than cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus and houseplants, and in some cases substances that could be dangerous to those with allergies.

Among the attorney general's findings was a popular store brand of ginseng pills at Walgreens, promoted for "physical endurance and vitality" that contained only powdered garlic and rice. At Wal-Mart, the authorities found that Ginkgo biloba, a Chinese plant promoted as a memory enhancer, contained little more than powdered radish, houseplants and wheat - despite a claim on the label that the product was wheat- and gluten-free, the Times report said.

Three out of six herbal products at Target - Ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort and valerian root, a sleep aid - tested negative for the herbs on their labels. But they did contain powdered rice, beans, peas and wild carrots. And at GNC, the agency said it found pills with unlisted ingredients used as fillers, like powdered legumes, the class of plants that includes peanuts and soybeans, a hazard for people with allergies.

The attorney general sent the four retailers cease-and-desist letters Monday and demanded that they explain what procedures they use to verify the ingredients in their supplements.

"Mislabeling, contamination and false advertising are illegal," said Eric T. Schneiderman, the state attorney general. "They also pose unacceptable risks to New York families - especially those with allergies to hidden ingredients."

Industry representatives have argued that any problems are caused by a handful of companies on the fringe of the industry.

"If this data is accurate, then it is an unbelievably devastating indictment of the industry," said Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an expert on supplement safety.

Walgreens said it was taking the matter seriously and would remove the products from its shelves nationwide. Wal-Mart said it would reach out to the suppliers of its supplements "and take appropriate action". A spokesman for GNC said the company would cooperate with the attorney general but stood behind the quality and purity of its store brand supplements.

Stop supplement for a few years. Now it is just plain hard exercises like running and some core muscle building. I think no amount of supplements can substitute for lack of exercises.

I have tried taken multi-vitamins but I think it makes me loss focus and weaker? I am now taking vitamin C (1,000mg) only.

Consider time released Vitamin C type which released over staggered period of time...

My nephew has this condition too but he's actively engaged in sports like swimming, jogging, cycling, archery, etc.......

The paedaetrician who diagnosed it (>15yrs ago) said that the only concerns are : he may not excel in competitive sports (due to low or borderline HB levels) but can lead normal life & must have genetic counseling when he wants to start a family next time.

Bro, try to read around, ask around and most important do what you believe. Sometimes, doctors can only tell you what they read from the book, if you listen to them and just give up, that's the end, doctors don't fight for you or fight with you, you fight for yourself.

My cousin had an operation, Doctor told him if he does not recover within 6 months, he would not recover. 2 years on, and he is running around like he use to be..

Read this, http://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/koh-not-running-scared

Doctor said she cannot even walk, but she ran the marathon..LOL

Why increase your sports intensity when u had been doing fine? It's not as if your HB level has suddenly increased ........you will feel fatigue becos of the reduced oxygen carrying capacity in your blood circulation.

Perhaps light regular exercises together with reduced Carbo intake is better to maintain your level of fitness. IMHO

more important thing is the other partner must not have the same medical condition. Else, better not have kids.

I only discovered I have this after my first child. In fact, most people's life is just like anybody else without noticing it.

I think taking can sometimes cause people to develop a dependency on it, whether real or perceived, such that your body actually don't function as well if you stop or mentally you will feel 'insecure' if you don't take.

Plus money no enough [:p]
