Was thinking of this just now and hence did a web search on sgcarmart.

at the moment:

total number of COE passenger cars on sale : 128

breakdown by make : benz 33, bmw 9, toyota 6, honda 8, volkwagen 10 etc

Seems benz still the most popular car to keep after 10 years as can be seen from the data.

exactly. those not here probably owner extend COE are the most popular.

Then those cars that are so solid that no owners want to sell, but renew COE .. won't be reflected here right ?

Old Mercedes, esp the 80's are "Over Engineering" cars, models like W-126,if you can still find a mint condition,1993 300SEL,Classic[the last batch],you drive out,it still won't look out of shape,in today's world.

When all other aspects (eg reliability, part-availability etc) being equal, cars with high OMV values are less attractive for renewing COE (due to bigger "loss" in forgoing scrap value) compared with those with moderate OMV values, true/false??

From 2017 to 2019 , I foresee many VW Mk5 , especially the Gti , renew COEs . Its over-engineered when compared to the Mk 6 and 7 , and do not have the infamous gearbox issue .

Personally I think a high OMV one is more worth renewing , as the similar model now will be subjected to the tiered ARF tax when registered new.

In fact many supercars choose to forgo the PARF benefit and renew their COEs .

Would luv to buy the VW Mk5 in 2-3 years time and renew the COE.. still find the design good enough to withstand time

Agreed that most COE cars are mercs, used to be many Civics EG/EK in the market too, but many are scrapped.

I do own a W140 Benz in Msia, old it may be but the build/ride quality puts many cars built today to shame. It's extremely reliable too without too much modern gadgets.

I don't think so. Take for example:

1. A Mercedes S-Class that is $460K with OMV of $100K. If you keep for 10 years, depreciation is about $38.8K per year (based on sgcarmart). But if you keep for 20 years, depreciation is $23K per year. Difference is $15.8K per year.

2. A Honda Accord that is $167K with OMV of $28K. If you keep for 10 years, depreciation is 15K a year. But if you keep for 20 years, depreciation is $8.5K. Difference is $6.5K per year.

In the above case, would you keep the Merc or Honda? You tend to lose much more with expensive cars if it is just driven for 10 years. This is even more obvious with super cars.

Then again… rich people won't want to be seen driving the same car for 20 years! So they'll likely sell off before COE is up, and then people who like a bargain like me will buy a 7~8 yr old S-Class to renew COE. :p

could it mean that the higher numbers means the car starts to break down after 10 years so many people are selling off instead of driving it to the end??lol
