Yahoo news: Group wants Dr M to take lie-detector test before debating Najib

A civil society group, which grabbed headlines recently with a RM1 million reward offer to anyone willing to expose Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's hidden wealth, now wants the former prime minister to undergo a polygraph test, as he seemed to "exhibit traits of a compulsive liar".

The Citizens for Accountable Governance Malaysia (CAGM) said that Dr Mahathir has to take the lie detector test before his proposed debate with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"Only by undergoing a polygraph test and passing it can Dr Mahathir make the public trust his words," CAGM chairman Md Zainal Abidin said in a statement today.

"CAGM has studied dozens of video footage on Dr Mahathir and concludes that he clearly exhibits the traits of a ‘compulsive liar’ when answering the media on sensitive and delicate questions."

Zainal also claimed that the retired statesman also exhibited "selective amnesia", as was seen during the Royal Commission of Inquiry into lawyer V.K. Lingam’s video clip scandal, adding that it was willing to pay for the test.

"CAGM is willing to bear the cost of acquiring a polygraph test machine and is prepared to pay the fees for a local or foreign expert in this field to carry out the test on Dr Mahathir at a time and date that is convenient for him," he added.

"Only if Dr Mahathir passes this test can the public trust him and only then he will have the credibility to take on Najib Razak in a televised debate. We hope Dr Mahathir will accept our humble request."

Earlier today, Dr Mahathir issued a challenge to Najib to a live debate on television, saying he was prepared to answer questions about his 22 years as prime minister.

In a closed-door meeting with Umno-linked non-governmental organisations yesterday, Dr Mahathir was recorded in a video saying that Najib could ask him anything about his tenure as Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister, and that he could also ask Najib about anything.

CAGM had previously said that it was prepared to offer RM1 million to anyone who could expose information on Dr Mahathir's wealth and assets.

However, critics have questioned the timing of the offer, saying that it came as Dr Mahathir upped his attacks against Najib and called for his resignation over a myriad of issues.

Detractors have also questioned how the NGO, formed only in April, could come up with such a large fund to reward whistle-blowers.

In an interview with The Malaysian Insider later, Zainal said the group has almost 2,000 members who have each contributed RM500 to RM1,000 to the cause and denied any political interference in its set-up. – June 18, 2015.

Malaysia's Tenaga says 1MDB power project stake buy is 'not a bailout'
Reuters Friday, Jun 19, 2015
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's national utility firm Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) defended a move to buy 1MDB's entire stake in a planned 2,000 MW coal-fired power project, saying it was "not a bailout" of the debt-laden state fund.
"Based on financial analysis, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the earnings of TNB. It is not a bailout of 1MDB," TNB Chief Executive Officer Azman Mohd said in a press statement.
Shares of TNB, which counts state investor Khazanah Nasional as a major shareholder, lost as much as 6.5 percent on Thursday after a minister said the government had approved the takeover. They were up 1.1 percent at the midday break on Friday.
Azman said TNB will not pay a premium for 1MDB's 70 percent stake in the project, called 3B, and its evaluation will consider the cost of the project's delay and higher foreign exchange rates. He did not comment on the pricing of the stake purchase. "The acquisition will bring positive value to TNB in the long-run," he said.
TNB said it had been offered a tariff rate not exceeding 26.67 sen (S$0.0957) per kilowatt-hour (kWh). 0.27 ringgit Japan's Mitsui & Co will retain its 30 percent stake in the project, that has been estimated to cost US$3.6 billion (S$4.81) to build.
1MDB, whose board of advisers is chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, has some 15 power and desalination plants in five countries. Its crown jewel is project 3B that it and Mitsui won the rights to build in February 2014, though 1MDB's liquidity problems have put its ability to build the plant in question.

Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba, recently refused to take a group photo with visiting UMNO leaders delegation as he was concerned that it may be misinterpreted by the world as a picture of "Alibaba and the 40 Thieves". [laugh]

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Datuk Seri Nazir Razak today posted a cryptic message to express hope that local institutions will soon discover the “truth” that Malaysians have been deprived of.
The CIMB Group chairman and brother to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak did not offer details into what institutions should be searching for which truths, but has been outspoken on the controversy surrounding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Taking to Instagram, Nazir posted the image of a sign board bearing the words “Truth. Next Exit”.
“I hope so. Our institutions must get there quickly. Malaysians feeling truth-deprived, depressing and divisive. After truth we can find reconciliation,” he wrote in a caption accompanying the image.Screencapture shows Datuk Seri Nazir Razak’s cryptic Instagram post.

In previous posts, Nazir had lashed out at 1MDB and the controversy surrounding the state-owned firm, most recently criticising it for reported delays in beginning its latest audit.
1MDB is currently under investigation by at least four federal agencies over its finances and its RM42 billion debt pile.
