Tire sidewall gash - need to replace?

While inflating my tires earlier, discovered a gash at the sidewall; seems quite bad, don't know whether to replace, please refer to attached photo (sorry taken in night and low light conditions).

 

Any bros have experience? Will visit my usual tire shop first thing tomorrow morning for assessment.

How come you got a usual tyre shop that you visit yet you don't know where to replace?

@GLZT,

 

I am unable to assess as a layman *whether* replacement is mandatory; of course, I will replace at my usual tire shop if required.

Oh. I had a similar experience before. Though it doesnt look serious, but peace of mind just change it anyway.

 

Tyres are quite strong and has many layers

Bro just change it lah, tyres are the only thing between you and the road. Peace if mind and safety first.

 

Plus touch wood if the tyre does rupture it would be a total loss of pressure + sidewall collapse, don't take that to chance.

The chip how deep? If it is not deep and on surface still okay to use one.

 

I got once stone hit tyre sidewall at 80km/h to 90km/h and the part where it was hit was budging out abit size is slightly smaller than 1 cent coin, and still can drive at 110km/h, 130km/h also no issues.

 

I also got once strike kerb and tyre sidewall chipped off abit, still can drive at high speed with no issues.

 

So depends on how deep the cut is for you.

Wa so deep, mine is quite minor chip just a few mm only. if 1 cm is deep lao leh.

I also think so; tires are quite new, only 7 months old.

 

Will go to tire shop and seek their assessment; but given Warren Buffett's famous quote, "don't ask the barber whether you need a haircut", most likely they will say replace.

tire flat within 1 week, need to pump air every week.

went to tire shop twice, find no fault. cannot find any leak

 

after 1 month, tired of pumping air every week, I changed the tire.

 

you may want to monitor the tire pressure closely if you don't replace it.

Dont change and you risk the tire exploding in your face when you pump it up or when it goes over uneven road. The gash will be the weak point where it is sustaining the high pressure...

Seems like it is rim protector section of the sidewall.

 

If it is not deep, then really, nothing to worry about. That section of the tyre was designed as raised with extra thickness to protect the rim.

 

If it is deep, you should weigh the cost vs peace of mind.

 

Generally, people think tyres should be changed when there is actual sidewall. However, if the actual cord lining inside is not damaged, then there is no need for a change. Problem is, we never know if the damage was just skin deep or has damaged the cord.
