If I understand correctly civil service is now based on 2 year contract with 1) possibility of becoming permanent staff 2) no option to renew.

Pay scale: S$10,580 – S$14,550 / S$14,551 – S$16,540

 

Erm.. above $16,540 is what scale.. stellar scale?

Joke aside.. This kind need MBA from prestigious uni right? Zapalang degree wait long long despite experience correct?

asst directors are fresh grad entry level in some ministries....

 

basically in civil service is very different from private sector.

 

in CS

 

the ones at the bottom call themselves DIRECTOR

 

the ones on top, are ADMIN OFFICERS

 

at the very top are the perm SECRETARIES

at the end of the day, its the food that you bring to the dinner table that matters...

Allow me. Many people who wants to switch from private to public sector, they eventually give up the idea, often because the pay offered is too low as compared to what they are getting , or what the incumbent thinks the public sector is paying.

 

Also, there are a few things that are not good about it. First , it is very hierarchical. Meaning rank plays a big factor in your work life. Second, public sector has a lot of procedures and administrative work , for transparency and accountability. In other words, it is hectic. It is not just the bottom line that matters only, but also the means of achieving them. Don't ever have the idea that public sector means easy life, that cannot be further from the truth. But it is true that it is much more secure job and one doesn't have to worry losing his job in old age. However, some jobs are indeed of two years contract, which are subject to renewal and is not a certainty.

When applying for the job and subsequent promotion, paper is still valuable. A poly grad(w/o a degree) will never be able to be promoted to director level despite what LHL presented in the National Day Rally.

 

Fully agreed on this point cause I was in CS before and left.

You have no possibility of moving with them or have family issues doing so?

 

If so, then better move out of the industry - I was in a similar situation but I think my experience level is lower than yours (4 years exp only) and my skillset is transferable to other industries and jobs. Most of the "good" companies in this industry are no longer in SG so even if oil prices go up again, it will not benefit you.

 

FYI, I just started on a new job in a completely different industry yesterday and the new role should require quite a far bit of OT. (I actually left Saipem in mid 2014 for a different role in O&G which I will not share here)

It does depend. TS is around 35 but I was in the same industry and many of us much younger folks were similarly affected.

 

My friends with 2 years experience (around 22-24 years of age) were also let go. Many had to start afresh in new industries since 2 years experience in a niche role is quite useless.

I was surfing around to see what options i have, and i found this thread on moving to public sector

But MX9 superscale sounds only like mid level scale

 

Yup very tough to move to public sector.

I mean, they cant simply make anyone a minister right?

 

Moreover, i hear its very politically incorrect to wear full gold Rolexes and smoke cigars in civil service. Regardless of what position one holds.

 

Looks like i have to forget joining civil service and continue to be unemployed....

sigh i am one of those u mention moving into vulnerable age group.

 

 

but i don't think public sector 's pay now can match what we make in private sector.

 

its only the assurance of an iron rice bowl then u feel secure and happier (maybe?)

Not sure about iron rice bowl. Someone i know complain about being phased out. Sneaky way of doing it ... given impossible kpis, moved to shitty dept with x3 workload etc. Even outright retrenchment happens but discreet

yeah.

 

just interviewed for a CS position. now all contract basis. but the HR say the benefits are the same and will most probably convert to perm position within the contract period if you perform satisfactory.
