Car number retention

Basically nothing much except have to go down to LTA to finalize the transfer with physical documents.

During the period of time before delivery, car can still be driven but bearing the new plate SKV series on old car and retained plate is taken out and registered to the new car. So no inconvenience at all. My dealer thought is full transfer and expect me to hand over immediately cause no insurance. LTA advise is only the plate not the car.

However I will still have to pay $1300/- first but they shall refund me $1200/- after the retention $100/- after which.

just asking... so is the transfer...

from your dad ---> you ---> dealer, or

your dad ---> you ---> your dad, or

your dad ---> you ---> your dad ---> dealer?

I think it's

dad's existing car number --> TS new car

dad's car gets a new SKV number.

dad's existing number is retained in LTA's system, ready to be transferred to TS new car.

You are right. A SKV plate just issued to me for the existing ride and registered under his name. While the retention number is transferred to my name and ready to be transferred to my new ride. But again my dad likes the new SKV plate as it also seems like bidded type of number.

Number retention resolved.

It should be now the old car is my bidded number plate under my dad's name as he is the registered owner.

I want to transfer this to my name this round to my upcoming new car registered under name.

so the car become 3rd owners ?

How can a car have joint account? Car same owner but my dad registered another car plate and still owns the existing car.

Me take away the retention number from his registered existing car which is now transferred to my name and the plate belongs to me now and can transfer to my new car registered under my name.

Hi,

I am going to buy a car from a direct owner.

The deal is taking place this week when we meet in LTA, where we transfer the ownership and he gives me a cashier order.

But he just told me he is going to retain the number.

So what does it mean for me?

Do I have to buy a number when we meet at LTA? How much will it cost?

How long do I have to wait?

Must I apply in advance?

Thanks in advance

He should be applying for his number retention first so that the old car will have a new number issued by LTA.  Only after that then he will transfer the vehicle ownership to you.  If he transfer the vehicle with the old number to you, he can say bye bye to his old number liao.

Oh yah, you will need to go make new plates for your new number within a couple of days too.  Cost about $45 for a pair.

All these is assuming that the loans and payments are all settled.

Twincharged

The existing owner should pay for the plates. Or get a discount from him should you do it.

Yes, don't let the making of the physical plate become your problem.

There're shops near LTA which do it for $30... if for some reason he can't, make sure you are reimbursed.

No need to buy car number unless u want nice numbers...

LTA can issue new car number (system generated) on-the-spot.

And remember this is the time to put on the million dollars smile when standing at the LTA counter.  For that you will be rewarded the long long list of fresh from oven license number set. You will be spoilt for choice.

If NOT, prepare to receive 5354, 5853, 1477, 4453 etc........
