Ms Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at gas manufacturing firm Leeden national Oxygen on Oct 12, 2015.

SINGAPORE - The woman who died in the Jurong fire on Monday (Oct 12) had grown up without a mother.

Now, her infant daughter will grow up without her mother, too.

Chemist Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at Leeden National Oxygen, a gas manufacturing firm. Of the seven others who were injured, three remain hospitalised, the Manpower Ministry said in an update. The remaining four were discharged on Tuesday.

The ministry also said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. It has also issued a stop-work order for the production and bottling of hydrocarbons, and the buying and selling of bottled gases stored in the area adjacent to the lab where the fire broke out.

Ms Lim, a Malaysian who became a Singapore citizen only a month ago, had returned to work after her maternity leave one week before the fire.

She was married for about two years, said her family members, who were at the mortuary next to the Singapore General Hospital on Tuesday morning. She leaves behind her husband and six-month-old daughter.

Ms Lim had lost her own mother to kidney failure 22 years ago. Her mother was also 30 years old when she died, her family said.

Her granduncle, Mr Gay Thiam Huat, who lives in Singapore, told reporters in Mandarin that he remembered her as a "bubbly, lovely girl" who often visited his home when she first came to Singapore with her mother at a young age.

The last time he and the rest of the family saw her was about two years ago, at her wedding.

Said Mr Gay, 64, a lorry driver: "She was not sure if she wanted the Singapore citizenship initially... She thought the cost of living here was quite high.

He added that she could have changed her mind as Singapore holds a special meaning to her. She had studied and worked in Singapore since a young age.

"She met her husband, who is also from Malaysia, in university here," Mr Gay said.

Ms Lim's husband, who is now a Singapore citizen, was also at the mortuary on Tuesday morning, along with his parents. He was distraught and did not speak to the media.

Ms Lim, who lived with her husband in Jurong West, had been working at Leeden National Oxygen for more than a year. Previously, she did food testing at another company.

Her remains will be sent back to her hometown of Senai in Johor on Tuesday evening, said Mr Gay. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Its seem like a lot of big companies dealing with dangerous goods/chemicals had neglected "Safety At Workplace" practices ... [sweatdrop]

Shell at Bukom had a fire few months back.

you will be surprised how much more aware of their surroundings when they are six months old than when they are six years old.

sad

at least her kid is just 6 months old and won't miss her mom that much.

less stress for her caregivers

Family bids a sorrowful farewell to Jurong fire victim in Johor wake

SINGAPORE - Despite the pain from a C-section birth, chemist Lim Siaw Chian would express her milk daily for her four-month-old daughter.

"She would wake up at 6am and take both her daughter and the milk to the babysitter's on the way to work... Now that she's gone, we don't know what to (feed the infant)," said the chemist's father, who only wanted to be known as Mr Lim, in Mandarin.

His only daughter was killed in Monday's blaze at Leeden National Oxygen, a gas manufacturing firm in Tanjong Kling Road. Several explosions were heard as a fire engulfed a ground-floor laboratory.

At Ms Lim's wake in Skudai today, her father, who has four other sons, recounted how he broke down when he discovered three remaining packets of breast milk in Ms Lim's fridge.

He later delivered them to his granddaughter, who is currently with her babysitter in Jurong.

"It pains me to know that her daughter will never know her mother," he said.

Ms Lim's husband and relatives were at the mortuary on Tuesday morning to collect her remains.

Her father-in-law, who only wanted to be known as Mr Ooi, remembers the first time he met the woman about 10 years ago.

"My (elder) son was very excited when he told me he found a girlfriend in university," he said in Mandarin. The couple had met when they were in the University of Malaya for their undergraduate studies.

They later went to Singapore for work and did their Masters in the National University of Singapore. They took on Singapore citizenship to give their daughter a brighter future.

"I told him to bring her on a holiday in Genting, where I was, and show her to me," he said, adding that he liked Ms Lim immediately. "She dressed very simply, in a t-shirt and jeans, and spoke to me very respectfully."

On Monday, Mr Ooi received a call that would break his heart.

"When my son called to tell me about the accident, I couldn't make out what he was saying. He was crying so badly," he said. "I only heard him saying 'Siaw Chian is no more'."

His son had rushed to the accident site but the place had already been cordoned off.

Since the accident, his son has barely slept or eaten, Mr Ooi said. "Our focus right now is on Siaw Chian's afterlife preparation."

Both Mr Ooi and Mr Lim want investigations into the fire to be completed.

"We want a clear explanation on why my daughter was the only one who died in the fire," said Mr Lim.

Meanwhile, Mr Ooi had urged his son to move back to Penang or Kulai where he can receive family support.

"My son said no. (Singapore) was where Siaw Chian and he built their home. He wants to live there until he dies in memory of her," said Mr Ooi.

Nothing can compensate the loss of the love of a mother, a wife and a daughter. Hope they can continue to live on bravely.

Family of chemist who died to get five-figure sum on top of compensation from insurer

A five-figure sum has been raised for chemist Lim Siaw Chian, who died in a fire at Leeden National Oxygen on Monday.

The gas manufacturing company's chief executive Steven Tham told The Straits Times yesterday that the amount was raised through donations from the management and workers. He declined to reveal the exact figure.

The company has also chartered a bus to take its staff to Ms Lim's hometown in Senai, Johor, today and tomorrow, where her wake is being held. The 30-year-old leaves behind her husband and an infant daughter.

Mr Tham said the money raised "is on top of the compensation which we will be getting from the insurer". He added: "We are all sad that this has happened and we hope to help her family.

"We have also engaged professional counsellors to help affected workers."

The blaze at the company's premises at 21 Tanjong Kling Road also left seven workers injured.

One remains warded in the National University Hospital.

All seven and Ms Lim's family will be compensated by the insurer, noted Mr Tham.

The company will also claim insurance for the damage to its property.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Manpower Sam Tan visited Leeden National Oxygen yesterday to inspect the site.

He said: "It is a stark reminder that workplace safety is of paramount importance and must be a key priority. Safety standards are always being updated, so companies must keep reviewing their processes."

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

"At the end of the investigation, we must learn from this accident, take necessary precautions and work with the unions and industry groups to prevent such accidents in future," added Mr Tan.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said: "The company (has) set up technical committees to work with MOM on the investigation and tightening of safety processes, as well as inspected adjacent production facilities to ensure that they remain safe for workers."

The MOM also issued a stop- work order for the production and bottling of hydrocarbons, and the buying and selling of bottled gases stored near the lab where the fire broke out.

Mr Tham said: " It's better to ensure that everything is safe again before we start work there."

Ya..... you (MoS, MOM) can talk a lot but what action will FSB (SCDF) and MOM take ? :yuush:

Another area waiting for some form of emergency to happen is Mustafar ..... [sweatdrop]

Look at the amount of goods stack inside the shopping area especially clothing and leather goods area with small space for shoppers to browse the items.

We had a Robinson fire 4 decades ago at Raffles place (before MRT- see photo attach) and we do not want history to happen again. Seven lives were lost in that fire and it happen just before christmas and inside stack full with x'mas goods ..... :ouch-it-hurts:

RIP young mother.

Sincere condolences to the bereaved family and may the hubby be strong to ensure the baby is well looked after. Hopefully the young child will be happy and as bubbly as her dear mummy.

Haiz, life is so short, unpredictable and that's why it's so precious. Cherish loved ones.

Safe ride and be alert always
