Drivers beating Red Light

I was on my way to watch Ip Man 3 at Shaw Centre on 1st Jan at around 445pm.

Was waiting at the junction of Scotts Road and Stevens Road/Draycott Road to turn right to park my car at Shaw Centre.

When the light turned green, there was this City Cab driver who beat the red light and I almost got into accident with him.

I won't upload the video as I am having issues with my video editing software, but I suppose the 3 pics are sufficient to illustrate and the 3rd picture shows the light is green in my favour.

It gave me a fright but it didn't stop me from enjoying Donnie Yen wing chun moves. =))

Maybe uncle taxi driver lost focus? Once I got rear collision by an old uncle taxi driver near a traffic light. Old uncle +70 claimed he is just too tired and fell asleep.

I did that.

Hi TS, I totally respect your decision to send the video to the TP.  Good job with your defensive driving in preventing an accident from happening. His action could have caused a serious or fatal accident. Thankfully nothing serious has happened.

While we are not sure if the taxi driver did it intentionally, I'm fairly certain he does not want to cause an eventual accident, which will put his livelihood on hold consequently and the lives of others at risk. I'm not trying to defend him in particular, but I hope we can be a little more understanding to the taxi uncles on the road. Some are very old and have health conditions. Most are driving at least 8 to 18 hours so that they can stand on their own feet and/or to provide for their family. To me taxi driving is a very tough job, as one need to drive long hours in our terok road conditions without clean toilet, decent meals and medical/leave benefits. Most are not taxi drivers by choice, and would not have dreamed of this career in their growing-up years.

Economy cycle is a faceless and heartless beast, we may end up as a taxi driver one day. Please live and let live.  :a-toast:

By not reporting the driver to TP, is it a selfless act?

Juz because this is tough & dangerous job, shouldn't the driver be more cautious?

On the same coin, his reckless act for livelihood should not deprive someone else's too if it results in claiming the lives of others. Life in SG is stressful enough not only for taxi drivers, all have a part to play in ensuring safety on the roads.

I must say it is very challenging to predict the traffic light changes here in Singapore. Every traffic light timing a d speed of change differs. LTA is follow aware and that is why they installed all these cameras on those that 'caught' the most offenders.

Did they make an effort to find out why rather than 'making money' from these cameras? Sometimes I don't know if I should alow down or speed up when approaching these traffic lights. If I slow down, those behind me must be frustrated with the way I drive.

I have a simple approach:

Green light: i will lift off throttle & coast till the line.  If still green, i will slam throttle & go.

Heck care about what the guy behind me is thinking.  It is my points which is my concern.

No need to predict. Just travel at the speed limit at traffic junctions, lift your foot off the accelerator as you are approaching the junction. If it turns amber before you reach the three white arrows before the junction, just stop. If you already at the second or first arrow, can just accelerate and go through. I never had a problem with this method.

I just came back from Sydney. And I must say that their traffic lights are far more efficient than here. The traffic are pretty heavy there too.

The timing for the traffic lights are faster , thus clearing the traffic faster. I never see any driver there drove "fast" in the city area.

I won't have to wait too long whenever I kena a traffic light. You won't see any place pile up with massive jam.

You just great. Must learn from you.

This is where I find it a problem. Evertime you come to a traffic light, you slow down to see it is going to change. Why can't they let me know I should continue or slow down to stop like most countries.

The argument that people will speed is just rubbish. Without the information, they will still speed to beat the light. And it is even more dangerous. Don't forget, every single traffic light timing differs. At least from green to amber to red should stay consistent.

This happened just now, as I was turning after the right turn arrow came on but this Hyundai Getz, SGH 239 D, ignored the red light and continue to turn into my path. Such irresponsible driver ought to be told off to prevent another accident from happening. Pls see attached link for video https://youtu.be/GgYawtt3FoU
