We always have a choice - whatapp, fb etc. to download, change setting to avoid excessive disturbance or to even install at all.

 

We may receive messages at anytime, but up to us to respond depending on urgency / implication of message. Any more urgent, it's just a phone call / few calls away.

Can always silent the notifications for chat group. Many ppl leave chat group because it's irritating, but can switch off the group one. Only when you got time to idle, then you open the group chat and read. Same like email, i hope nobody gets a notification whenever they receive an email unless they want to on their smart phone.

 

Be tech-savvy. Don't let technology use you, you use technology.

Understand that notification can be set for chat group. But I have important chat group I monitor, for instance those from my children schools, and my work. 

Unless I'm missing something, that individual chat group can be turned off.
