it was raining heavily yesterday afternoon at bukit timah area. and this vios driver was so kan jiong to provide shelter for his mother

and GF waiting for him at a pickup point that he engaged a R gear instead of P. he was lucky that i was sitting inside my car at the time

and i saw the vios was actually started to move and reversing without a driver. at first i was really thought someone could have taken

over the wheel from the inside. the heavy rain dropping on my screen was also affecting my visual too. later, i decided to make a dash

to stop the car from any damages.

so guys, this is what MT is safer than AT. double check your gear position.  [drivingcar]

Mistaking the R for the P is one level of gooduness, but exiting the car without realizing that it's still in motion is another level.

Good job for averting a disaster!

How did the driver can just alight from car after R gear is engaged? Though the car would start to move immediately after the gear is shift?

i think the car was in neutral then it reversed then he went to pull the handbrakes.

he cant change to park without pressing the brakes can he?

That's why conti cars Hv sensors that render the car to a stop when door not closed or when open . At least for bmw

the gear was in R position. it was lucky that the gear stick can be shifted up to the P in that split seconds.

Looks like quite old car. Toyota gearbox when old already the R gear takes very long to engage. My previous car took like 3-4s before the car will start creeping backwards. So I think the driver in a rush can get out of the car without realizing that it is moving. This is why I always like to pull the handbrake if I am alighting or letting people board. It is safer cuz the car won't move even if I am in the wrong gear.

Ya. That feature scared me the first time I was parking it though. Cuz I am so used to reversing without sensors and opening the door to look for obstacles behind. Then the first time I drove it, it just stopped by itself and went into P after creeping abit. Figured out that I need to have the seatbelt on or depress the brakes abit then it will let me move the car with the door open.

Same for Merc. Everytime I open door while reversing yo check how far from kerb, it auto goes into P. Have to step brake and engage R with door open to continue reversing. Even then the warning alarm will chime.

Actually, even when I open door while in D, car will automatically engage to P.

Looks like in Malaysia kampung area. Maybe driver too relaxed when over there.. Let his guard down.

Kudos to TS for his quick wit and bravery. I must admit if I am in that situation, I might not have been that decisive to run to the car myself.

Probably will sound the horn and shout at the driver to warn him. Maybe by then too late... Heh

I don't understand why people leave their engine on when they leave the car. It's just waiting for people to drive your car away. What's so difficult about shutting off the engine and starting it again later. Even if there are passengers inside it won't hurt to have the aircon off for a while.
