I know a lot of you like to knock Mediacorp shows and some cannot stand the sight of Pornsak, but I really must recommend to all of you this new series As I Hold Your Hand (大手牵老手), that started airing yesterday.

According to toggle, this is a programme to promote filial piety and will profile different parents and children.

Yesterday's episode 1 was about I think the head chef of Jack's Place. I didn't watch it from the start but I gathered that this head chef had a very troubled past, took drugs and even became violent towards his mother. But his mother believed in him and he eventually made something of himself and now is holding a very respectable job.

One part had him wanting to go to the road junction where his elder sister met with a car accident and passed on, together with his mother. His mother eventually didn't go near that junction, but the chef did. He wept when he was there, it was a very poignant moment but I think he needed closure.

It is a very well done show and reminds us about love from our parents and the importance of family ties.

If you want to catch up on it, here is the toggle link.

Too emo for me. Honestly I do not like to watch ppl's most vulnerable moments. Especially not for other ppl's entertainment. I think it's private and it should remain that way.

question is why would someone want to show their vulnerable and supposedly private moments on national tv?

filial or not, parents know can already....need to tell others?

true, But if they are willing to share their life experiences, then I think its very generous of them and we should learn something from their life ups and downs.. good show... think I'll call my mum and dad later...  [grouphug]

I also wonder why. They are probably too caught up in the moment. Will propbably regret it later.

I don't think that is necessarily the case. There could be any number of reasons.

Families may not ordinarily be expressive towards one another, going on such a program facilitates such expression.

It may also be possible that the child is proud of his/her parent and so don't mind sharing.

There are many people who speak to share their intimate life experiences or to inspire. It just so happens this is made into a TV program and it is one of thousands out there. I think it is not for us to judge why the person sharing chooses to share, of course if that makes you uncomfortable then perhaps the show is not for you.

Yes, but how good the parents are, not everyone knows. There is the recognition element. Just as I think many would be happy to have their children be recognised for how good they are, many children also wish to have their parents recognised for what they have done for their children.

Some people are naturally more private, some more expressive. There is no right or wrong and we may not understand them all, I certainly don't but I find the programme very nice.

All this stories had been repeated again and again when National Day or Election coming....

Its just the presenter different people.

Another will be the Tan family of 3 generation (78) of them staying together in a 3 storey bungalow. How during CNY, the family gather together for reunion dinner. The ladies (wives) will cook and in all 30 tables. They are in a supermarket business. Repeat & repeat again yearly.

If Ponsak is daring, do a documentary on Why Hairline Cracks Has No Safety Issue ....    :we-all-gonna-die:

Strange, ppl like to believe what they see on tv is real. Maybe I know how they work so I usually watch with a pinch of salt.

Aiya all these is like propaganda la. Brainwash you into behaving how they want you to behave.

Sure it can be real, but using these stories to guilt trip people, feels a bit not right. Like emotional blackmail.  -_-

lol all the cynics.

Well, as long as it spurs your own introspection/self reflection, nothing wrong with watching some "propaganda" shows.

Just like how some people use motivational posters or quotes to motivate themselves.

I do like to watch human interest drama, but more about community life in SG rather than such stories.

Exactly. I make no judgement on the subject persons in the show, whether they are good people, bad people, not relevant and doesn't affect me anyway, but it made me think about the blessings I have in life, what I am thankful for. That is what is important.

Some people can dump their parents at 1 room flat but when the parents passed away, the funeral do until so grand.

Don't wayang la. When the parents are alive, just treat them better. See them more often and bring them out for dinner, medical checkups, etc.

Passed away then the funeral do until so grand to show they are filial...pui.
