Get a sim card with data plan when you arrived Melbourne, you can buy one from Optus at the airport. Then just use google map(do remember to download offline map for those area without coverage) for GPS, easy.

Yup $2 for 500mb per day. Don't use for google map or surf net or utube very fast finish

Buy the $30 for 3GB, should be enough for google map and some internet use. Now spring time, no snow in Mt Buller liao, if you want nice scenic drive, can try heidelberg-kinglake rd up to Kinglake for lunch.

Another great scenic place to drive will be at Kangaroo island, South Australia.

From Melbourne to Mount Gambier “blue lake”

Granite island, Victor Harbor

Kangaroo Island

Grampians National Park

Yes. I drive in Kangaroo island. The drive was so nice....

And stay there for 2 nights which I felt us too short.

You maybe need around 7-8 days to throughly explore around kangaroo island. too many things to do there.

any good rental car to recommend ? dash cam provided by them ?

For Australia - think Hertz the best (although not the cheapest).

never go lost GPS useful but costly. Ensure its working, received a damaged one before.

dash cam - not available, not sure now.

Go to their website to view the cars and prices - can confirm online too.

eg https://www.hertz.com.au/p/hire-a-car/australia

Have used Hertz in Melbourne, Sydney, Goldcoast and Perth.

Previously also recommended by AAS - booked through them with some discount (in the past - now not sure).

Note:

1) Speed limit strongly reinforced even outside the city. Have received before (just above 15km/hr).

2) Parking in the city saw they used chalk to mark on the tyres to enforce maximum duration of parking.

Otherwise, very nice to drive there, most drivers are polite, give way etc.

Melbourne has always been like a second home to us. Lived there for awhile and now as a tourist, it is easy to get around by public transport, fantastic mix of food, relatively easy to navigate expressway for road trips.

Sharing a few great shots (IMO :D)...
