Alfa Romeo’s Q3-Rivaling SUV To Be Based On Shrunken Giorgio Platform

https://www.carscoops.com/2018/08/alfa-romeos-q3-rivaling-suv-based-shrunken-giorgio-platform/

Alfa Romeo’s expansion plan includes a new compact SUV to sit under the Stelvio, rivaling models like the BMW X2 and AudiQ3, set to go on sale in the next three years.

The Italian car maker wants to have the SUV market covered as much as possible, that’s why the plan is to add not only the smaller model but also a larger flagship SUV. The brand’s sales target is set at 400,000 units per year by 2022.

Driving a rental Q4 diesel Stelvio around Tuscany at the moment.

It's a big car and feels wide inside, but handles pretty damn good on the twisty country roads. Haven't really had a chance to open her up but the torque is decent and the gearbox quick-shifting but smoothe. I'm guessing this a base model since it's a rental car.

We're travelling really heavy, two of us but with 3 full-size suitcases. The boot couldn't take them without dropping the rear seats, but they were sliding forward under braking so we ended up having two in the boot and one lying on the back seat. No chance to test out the rear legroom/headroom yet.

Rented from Avis in Florence.

The category was Stelvio or equivalent, so i was half expecting them to give something else instead (you know how these busy rental places are). Pleasantly suprised that i got the Stelvio as booked.

Taking a drive to Volterra this afternoon so will snap some pics.

Finally back and managed to download some pics.

They aren't great as i snapped them in a hurry just before we left and the car is filthy.

Some days the car was just parked up as we didn't leave the premises.

Another angle to give a sense of scale, parked next to a Fiesta and 1-series. In urban areas it felt big but on the country roads it was nimble enough to shrink around me. Quite wide though, my passenger felt quite far away.

This was the luggage situation. Could not fit the suitcases in longitudinally without having to drop the rear seats and if we dropped the rear seats the suitacases were sliding too much under braking. For size reference silver rimowa is a 32" and we ended up dumping the 32" samsonite in the back seat.

It's a handsome car.

All in all, an enjoyable drive. The infotainment interface was decent but felt less slick than the audi one. Navigation system was good, got us to our destination in the countryside without much fuss after i switched it to english. The lane departure warning system got abit intrusive on the narrow country roads but i figured out how to turn down the sensitivity. The cabin is nice enough.

Power was decent for a diesel, managed a short pull on the highway (80-130) and it was decently quick. The torque was fine for regular driving conditions. The 8-speed ZF gearbox is seamless as ever. Suspension set-up is sporty, making the car quite agile and keeping bodyroll to a minimum. I was trail-braking it quite deep into some of the corners and the car handled it without any fuss or the electronic nannies kicking in. The downside is that the ride is not as refined over uneven surfaces as you might expect from this kind of SUV. The steering rack is quick for an SUV too.

Glad i decided to book the car and overall enjoyed the experience.

Those rims on the red Stelvio are so nice / sexy.  In love with them since the I saw those similar designs on the 159.  If ever, I buy an AR it must definitely comes with those.

Sexy as hell man

And those integrated chrome exhaust cutouts

But my honest opinion, at this price many will still buy a GLC.

Maybe 180-190k range will be better.

But the Giulia at SGD175,000 seems ok.

But the Giulia at SGD175,000 seems ok.

I feel the sweet spot for Giulia Super should be at 150-160 range. Around same price as the base A4 and 3er but with better power and specs to entice buyers. If the VES is not the 20k penalty, it should have been at the price.

Veloce to be at 190k range.

Stelvio Super at 180k range.
