Last night in Niseko, and we went to J'ai la patate for French cuisine. The chef only uses local ingredient and our course dinner was wonderful!

Hanakoji Sawada tonight, and this is the best kaiseki-ryÅri I have had anywhere in Japan. From the yuzu-scented appetizer, to the tempura corn, various parts of a Kegani crab, uni on eggplants, fugu sashimi, hamadai sushi, tuna and squid sushi, Hokkaido beef, soba and the splendid apple puree, every dish is beyond excellent. Every dish leaves an impression. We were taught to eat fugu sashimi with spring onion which turned out to be a great combination. The uni on eggplant is another combination that was so harmonious and brings out the best of both ingredient. The skin of the fried hamadai, how can I describe it, it's like eating crackers with vinegar rice - it was so damn crispy! The dessert of apple puree is also a special mention. We never had it before and what a delight!

This is very good value for a 3 Michelin star restaurant.

That's definitely good value at ¥15,000 per pax, given what some other restaurants are charging. And it's also the best dinner we have had during our Hokkaido trip thus far! Edited by Weez911

Yes. Best meal of our Hokkaido trip as well.

Your menu looks 70% similar to our summer visit. Guess we will wait for a few years before we return.

To be fair, Ryouriya So is not that far behind, as we also have a great time there. It's a one-man operation - no waiter, only the owner-chef cum server. We were quite impressed by his works.

Next time if we visit again, we will try Molière, the French restaurant!

They don't accept children, so we can't reserve there. Have you tried it and how is it?

Im thinking of 2 weeks in early dec 2019.

will it be too long to do a self drive trip?

will it be too cold and to slippery to drive?

still looking through this entire thread to source for ideas, and destinations to visit. any tips and recommendations greatly appreciated!

Hokkaido is an island and people always think islands are small.

Hokkaido is even bigger than Korea.

2 weeks is nothing. Hokk is big and there are so many different

places and things to see. I spent 22 days in Japan but only 9 days

in Hokk and there are so many things I haven't seen.

:D
