Volvo 40.1 Concept (XC40)

volvo-401-concept.jpgvolvo-401-concept.jpgvolvo-401-concept.jpgvolvo-401-concept.jpg

Volvo 40.2 Concept (S40)

volvo-402-concept.jpgvolvo-402-concept.jpgvolvo-402-concept.jpgvolvo-402-concept.jpg

40.1 and 40.2 concepts are built on Volvo’s CMA platform

After showing teasers on Snapchat, Volvo has now officially revealed two new concept cars. Dubbed 40.1 and 40.2, the cars preview new Volvo 40 Series models and are most likely a hint as to the design of the next Volvo S40 and XC40.

Both the concepts pick up design cues seen on the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90, starting with the “Thor’s Hammer” running lights and wide-mouth grille with Volvo’s Iron Mark emblem. The 40.1 is a crossover design with high ground clearance, black fender cladding, and darkened pillars and a black roof. Taut lines define the bodywork, while the sloped rear window is bookended by L-shaped taillights. The 40.2, meanwhile, is a lower and more sedan-like car, with its C-shaped taillights that more closely match the design of the new S90 sedan. As with the 40.1, the 40.2 concept rides relatively high on its large alloy wheels, with black cladding around the fender recalling the tough, high-riding stance of the S60 Cross Country.

The Volvo 40 cars will be the first to ride on the company’s new CMA modular platform. Smaller than the SPA platform used for the XC90/S90/V90, CMA will also accommodate a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, in this case called T5 Twin Engine. That powertrain will incorporate a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a three-cylinder gasoline engine, as well as electric motors. The CMA platform will also add an all-electric model, though it won’t arrive until sometime after Volvo’s larger, SPA-based EV debuts in 2019.

The 40.1 and 40.2 concepts represent Volvo’s contention that the global appetite for “premium small cars” will continue to grow over the coming years.

“CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars,” Volvo Car Group senior vice president of design Thomas Ingelath said in a statement. “They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavor of small Volvos to come.”

The first production models from Volvo’s new 40 Series range will debut in 2017, potentially with styling not too far removed from these concepts.

Its a nice piece of kit, like a prettier Macan... but Wearnes sells them like Porsche prices, coupled with the poor resale, makes a poor buy.

If its going at 120-150k at current COE prices, then its still movable... above that, like 180k-220k, they can kiss goodbye to any significant sales figure

most European brands models that are sold in PRC are Made in PRC - via joint ventures with local partners,

for rest of the world of the consumption, Volvo should be still made in Europe ( Belgium or Sweden).

Lets be honest, local authorized dealers is not so stupid to bring in made in PRC models, knowing what type of mindset local Sinkies have (but bear in mind, although some Mercs & BMW models are made in South Africa, they are still selling like hot cakes / big volume sales)

Volvo has made leaps and bounds to the quality of their interior..

But as for exterior, probably need to fine tune their rear?

Volvo has launched its new entry-level SUV, the XC40, which is on sale in Britain today priced from £28,000, and with deliveries starting early next year.

The new model is a small SUV aimed primarily at urban drivers. Its closest rivals are probably the Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, though it’s arguably more stylish than any of these competitors.

Volvo says that this car is its first ever premium compact SUV, one of an increasing number of subdivisions of the swelling ‘sports utility’ market segment. The Swedish firm has historically been known for its upmarket estate cars, as well as the the more recent XC90 and XC60 SUVs.

The XC40 inherits its looks from both of these cars, as well as a great deal of the technology that sets them apart from their rivals. We’ve been impressed by how closely the XC60 resembles the more expensive and larger XC90 in terms of comfort and quality, so if the similarities extend down to the XC40 it will likely become a new benchmark for the segment.

The new car measures 4425mm long, compared to the XC60’s 4688mm and the XC90’s 4950mm.

"The XC40 is our first entry in the small SUV segment, broadening the appeal of the Volvo brand and moving it in a new direction," said Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson.

"It represents a fresh, creative and distinctive new member of the Volvo line-up."

Two diesel engines and three petrol engines will be available to begin with. These powertrains range in power from 150hp to 250hp, and all bar the entry-level 156hp T3 petrol are available with all-wheel-drive. A hybrid version is expected in due course, though this firmly fossil fuel launch is arguably at odds with Volvo’s electric ambitions announced earlier in the year.

Standard equipment in the XC40 includes a 9-inch touchscreen, sat-nav, Spotify, and a mobile phone app that allows owners to control certain aspects of the car (such as the heater) remotely. Externally, all XC40s come with 18-inch alloys and LED headlights.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available as options, as is the 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

We won’t know how comfortable the XC40 is until we sit in it, but Volvos rarely disappoint and are among the best in the business for sophisticated cabins. A 432-litre boot space is advertised, which is a little more than the Evoque but much less than the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The car is ready to order now, and deliveries are expected to begin early next year.

Volvo's compact 40-series model line launches with a crossover SUV, the XC40.

http://www.caranddri...s-and-info-news

2019-volvo-xc40-photos-and-info-news-car

The world is in no way short of premium compact SUVs. Still, Volvo believes there’s space at the watering hole for at least one more. The new XC40 launches in the United States in the first quarter of 2018 as the company’s third model line. It also marks the debut for the new Compact Modular Architecture, which will go on to underpin all of Volvo’s 40-series cars as well as the portfolio of Geely sub-brand Lynk & Co.

2018-volvo-xc40-inline1-photo-691560-s-o

The XC40 is designed to appeal to a younger audience than Volvo’s more grown-up offerings, with exterior styling credited to Ian Kettle, a 31-year-old Brit whose proposal was accepted in 2013 when he was just a year out of the prestigious Royal College of Art design school. While there is a strong family resemblance to Volvo’s bigger SUVs, it’s not meant to be a little brother; distinctive XC40 details include an upswept rear side window, a clamshell hood, and the sort of plastic wheel-arch cladding that has become visual shorthand for a crossover in recent years. At 174.2 inches long, it’s 10.4 inches shorter than the XC60 but, at 65.2 inches high, just 0.1 inch shorter, with a wheelbase of 106.4 inches, down 6.4 inches from the 2018 XC60. It has been designed for big wheels, with 17-inchers the smallest standard fitment and up to 20s offered as dealer options.

2018-volvo-xc40-inline2-photo-691561-s-o

Engineering is conventional. The XC40 has steel bodywork—including its liftgate and hood—and uses a strut front suspension and a multilink rear setup. Two powertrains will be available from launch in the United States, both using Volvo’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The entry-level T4 will be front driven, and the brawnier T5 will have all-wheel drive via a part-time Haldex clutch on the rear axle. Volvo said the T5 will have 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque but hasn’t released a power output for the T4—although, based on the other models wearing a T4 badge, this should be around 200 horsepower.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox will be standard in the U.S.; there are no plans to offer the manual gearbox that lower-powered versions will get in other markets. Nor will we see the 180-hp 2.0-liter diesel that will be sold in Europe. A hybrid using the three-cylinder gasoline engine and dual-clutch gearbox that Volvo told us about last year will follow shortly afterward, and the company also said it will produce an electric version later.

Two trim levels will be available from launch, although the official line is not to think of these as conventional trim levels. Each gets its own selection of exterior color choices as well as generous standard equipment. The cheaper Momentum version will have the option of a white roof as well as—for the truly fashion forward—white mirror caps and white wheels. The marginally more expensive R-Design will have a gloss-black roof as standard and some sportier exterior details, including prominent exhaust tips. A range-topping Inscription model will be added later.

2018-volvo-xc40-inline3-photo-691562-s-o

Inside, the XC40 is more radical. All versions will come with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as the same 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen fitted to the bigger XC60, with a similar degree of connectivity including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Interior trim materials include textured plastic trim on the door panels and felt in the door pockets. On the preproduction cars we saw, the dashboard panel featured an embossed pattern based on a map of the Gothenburg area.

Storage space is generous and includes a pop-out trash container between the front seats and a space designed to hold a box of tissues. “Cupholders should be for cups,” said Jonas Engström, Volvo’s 40-series product boss, explaining why the company has created so much additional space. Rear-seat space is adult viable, but the rising beltline will make it hard for smaller kids to see out. According to Kettle, this is an indication that the design team is aiming the XC40 primarily at those who have not yet started families. Cargo space is a respectable 16 cubic feet—millennials shop at IKEA, you know—with a load floor that can accommodate the parcel shelf underneath it when the shelf is not in use. The XC40 also has exceptionally spacious front-door pockets, a result of having no low-mounted speakers. Instead all versions will use what Volvo calls an “air woofer” within the dashboard to deliver low frequencies, which is augmented by smaller, high-mounted tweeters.

2018-volvo-xc40-inline4-photo-691563-s-o

A predictable emphasis has been put on safety. All XC40s will have automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection as part of a collision-avoidance system that works at speeds up to 40 mph. This also includes oncoming-lane mitigation, which will actively steer the car back to the correct side of the road in the face of approaching traffic. An optional IntelliSafe system includes Volvo’s semi-autonomous Pilot Assist, which can work up to 81 mph, and a rear cross-traffic alert system that will automatically brake if it detects an approaching vehicle when backing out of a parking spot.

ever since they said they going to make in china and export out ..  i strike out volvo permanently from my list for life. the value will drop if made in china. no premium feel

You arre saying china dont have the technology or skill to make good product? or you are saying you wont want a cheaper volvo because it is now china made.

it is all about how much you willing to pay my friend. it is time to wake up and look at the half filled glass.

Actually both. I have seen BMW made in China and merc made in China. The quality of fit is still not up to the mark. Technology is still from Sweden I believe and some parts could have localised in China. I am in manufacturing line supplying to automotive. There is still a gap. Furthermore, paying the same price for a made in China product vs a European product means geely is making more margin I guess. Same for made in Thai and made in Japan camry concept. In the past I owed a Japanese one and when I compared it does made a different. The mindset. U can say they have improved but the gap is still there. Yes you can say how much I willing to pay. I am not going to pay the same price. If u said 30% down maybe.

Heman75, that is my point. End of the day, the gap is due to the amount you willing to pay. At the same price point, probably you will get better product from the one catching up. Once upon a time, nobody wants Japanese product in Singapore when policeman is still in shorts. [:p]
