Twincharged

No choice I guess, else where to put the front camera?

I'd rather they just leave the small black bezel at the top like LG or Samsung. Hopefully the rest of the companies won't follow that trend though... Just like the headphone jack.

Can maximize the space on the screen, why not?

Just that Apple needs to fine tune the software to make the notch non usable for applications but indications of time and battery power all the time.

Huawei has unveiled the Nova 2 Lite, a S$298 entry-level smartphone with a bezel-less 18:9 aspect ratio display and a dual rear camera setup.

The Nova 2 Lite is one of the first entry-level smartphones with a bezel-less display, boasting a 5.99-inch 18:9 aspect ratio FullView Display with a Full HD resolution.

On the rear of the device, there's a dual camera setup that pairs a 13-megapixel lens with a 2-megapixel lens, allowing for background blurring bokeh effects. As for the front camera, the Nova 2 Lite has an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with an advanced flash for better selfies. The intelligent Selfie Toning Flash automatically detects the light on someone’s face and intelligently adjusts the brightness for a natural-looking selfie. This means that the flash can produce flattering soft light under low-light or even pitch black conditions.

The Nova 2 Lite also sports Huawei's new Face Unlock feature, a facial recognition technology is powered by an AI algorithm to automatically detect up to 1,024 points on the human face and perform high-accuracy mapping. Huawei claims that Face Unlock will let users unlock their screens in less than 900 milliseconds.

The Nova 2 Lite will be launching this Thursday (15th March) at the IT Show at Booths 8139 & 8205, as well as all Huawei Concept Stores, M1, Singtel and StarHub stores, Lazada.sg and Qoo10.sg, and all major consumer electronic stores.

Nubia announces Red Magic: A smartphone for gamers Move over Razer; you have a new gaming phone bed partner By Cal Jeffrey,  Today 3:03 PM
2018-04-20-image-17.jpg

China-based ZTE subsidiary Nubia has unveiled a new smartphone dubbed “Red Magic” built with gamers in mind.

Last November we reported on Razer’s debut in the smartphone market. Razer was looking to carve a niche into the industry with a phone built for gaming.

Nubia has apparently decided that there is room for two in this niche as the Red Magic will not only be geared for gaming; it has a look that says, “Pick me up and play me. I’m a gaming phone.” Sure, the Razer Phone has the signature glowing Razer logo on the back, but Nubia has gone full-on gamer crazy on the rear of the Red Magic.

The back panel of the phone is not flat. It raises from the edges to the center forming a slight prism shape (Nubia calls it "diamond-cut). Along the ridge of the prism is an RGB strip that can output 16 million colors. Users can customize the color pattern with four different modes in the settings.

2018-04-20-image-4.png

A 24-megapixel camera can be found right above a fingerprint sensor near the top on back. The selfie cam on the front is 8MP. It is worth mentioning that from a camera standpoint, the Red Magic has a better configuration than most other smartphones on the market.

It also has four speakers in each corner on the back highlighted in red and adding to that gamer look. The speakers use “smart amplification technology” and a built-in DAC.

A flashy back panel and great cameras are all fine and good, but what a gamer is really going to care about is the specs.

The Red Magic’s 5.99-inch IPS LCD is slightly bigger than the Razer Phone’s, but at a lower resolution (2160x1080 v. 2560x1440). It’s driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 just like its competition, but I find it surprising that Nubia didn’t go with the newer 845 processor.

The high-end model sports 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage, but Nubia plans to offer a cheaper 6/64GB configuration. While the phone should have plenty of resources to run even the most demanding of mobile games, there is also a switch on the side of the phone that when toggled will divert more resources to the currently active game. Nubia claims this will reduce load times and increase frame rate and visual fidelity.

It has a 3,800mAh battery giving it a good heft. Under normal usage conditions, a battery that big should last 24-36 hours. However, this is a phone built for gaming, so its “normal” usage is not that of a typical smartphone. Nubia claims that it can keep you playing Arena of Valor for up to 7 hours.

The Red Magic does not have an official release date set. Nubia is launching an IndieGoGo campaign that starts next week on April 26. At that time, early backers can pick up the phone for $399, which is a bargain, as long ad the crowdfunding campaign doesn’t go belly up. You can also enter to win one of five phones Nubia will be giving away on its contest page.

Lenovo teases the Z5, a true all-screen phone 95 percent screen-to-body ratio, anyone? By David Matthews,  Today 8:44 AM
2018-05-14-image-4.jpg

The current trend in smartphones these days is seeing how small manufacturers can make the bezel. Apple notoriously ditched its infamous home button that also allows an almost all screen design save for the notch at the top for the Face ID facial recognition system. Lenovo is trying to one up everybody by teasing a truly “all-screen” phone.

Lenovo’s Vice President Chang Cheng teased a sketch of the Lenovo Z5 on Weibo, China’s social media network. The sketch itself shows a phone with an impressive ultra-thin bezel that an earlier tease claimed has a 95 percent screen-to-body ratio. Cheng added that the Z5 would have significant technological breakthroughs supported by at least 18 patents.

2018-05-14-image-7.jpg

What’s not clear from the sketch is how the Z5 will handle the front facing camera, sensors, and earpieces. The Vivo Apex has a pop up camera but still has a chin for the display driver. Both the iPhone X and Essential Phone contain “notches” for their respective cameras. As far as the rest of the sensors, ultrasound proximity sensors and piezoelectric could be a viable technology. Fingerprint sensors embedded into the display are also a distinct possibility like the Vivo X20 Plus UD.

All-screen phones are the holy grail of current smartphone trends and up until now, no OEM has been able to create an actual ultra-thin smartphone without making some sacrifice. We’ll see if Lenovo’s 18 patented technologies can crack the code.

Pre-Order The LG G7 ThinQ In Canada And Get A Free 4K UHD TV
May 15, 2018 - Written By Mihai Matei

141087-phones-feature-lg-v30-release-dat
As Canadian retailers are gearing up for the release of the LG G7 ThinQ, the Korean tech giant has announced an upcoming pre-order promotion for the device in the region, which will allow prospective buyers who act fast to purchase the flagship alongside a free 4K UHD smart TV. The pre-order promotion will commence later this week on May 18 and will last until the end of the month. The list of partner carriers and retailers who are eligible for this particular pre-order bonus is fairly large, including names such as Bell, Fido, Koodo, Rogers, SaskTel, Telus, Virgin Mobile, Best Buy, Walmart and more.

Officially announced earlier this month, the LG G7 ThinQ is the latest flagship phone to bear LG’s branding and the company’s first smartphone to feature a display notch at the top. The device has a 6.1-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 3120 x 1440 and a 19.5:9 image format, and employ’s Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile chipset solution to date, i.e. the Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Software-wise the unit runs Android 8.0 Oreo covered by LG’s proprietary Android skin, and the software has been further enhanced by LG’s ThinQ AI platform. Evidently, the smartphone is meant to compete with rival flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9 series, and if the hardware and software are not enough then prospective buyers in Canada will soon have an additional pre-order incentive for choosing LG’s solution over others. The LG 4K smart TV offered by the OEM as a pre-order bonus has a 43-inch diagonal and a 4K resolution, though it’s unclear whether the TV model in question is one of the OEM’s newer creations powered by its ThinQ platform, which would allow it to easily connect to and communicate with the LG G7 ThinQ itself.

The pre-order promotion for the LG G7 ThinQ in Canada will start on May 18 and last until May 31, which makes sense given that the flagship is expected to become available for purchase later in June. The list of qualifying carriers and retailers is generous and can be consulted in the gallery below or by visiting LG’s official promotions website.

IPS LCD.

That's cos the G6 had an OLED panel (made by LG) which had very poor brightness levels, and was condemned in online reviews.

OnePlus unveils flagship OnePlus 6, starting at $529 New wireless earbuds were also showcased By Shawn Knight  on May 16, 2018, 10:48 AM

OnePlus at a media event on Wednesday showed off its flagship OnePlus 6 smartphone for the first time. The Chinese smartphone maker in the lead-up to the event positioned the device as a speed demon, going so far as to confirm more than a month ago that it would be powered by Qualcomm’s speedy Snapdragon 845 SoC mated to a generous 8GB of RAM.

Indeed, that promise came to fruition on Wednesday with the unveiling of the OnePlus 6 and a second, unexpected device in the OnePlus Bullets Wireless earphones.

2018-05-16-image-11.jpg

The real star of the show, of course, is the new OnePlus 6. It packs a 6.28-inch notched display (2,280 x 1,080 resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio) coated in Corning Gorilla Glass 5 driven by the aforementioned Snapdragon 845 clocked at up to 2.8GHz with Adreno 630 graphics. It can be paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 on-board storage although you can spring for as little as 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage should you choose.

Audiophiles will be happy to learn that the OnePlus 6 retains the 3.5mm audio jack. Around back, you’ll find a vertically-aligned and centered dual camera array consisting of a 20-megapixel primary sensor (Sony IMX 519) and a 16-megapixel secondary sensor (Sony IMX 376K) with OIS and EIS (a single 16-megapixel selfie cam graces the front of the device in the notch). Both rear cameras feature f/1.7 apertures.

2018-05-16-image-2.png

Video can now be captured at up to 4K 60 frames per second and if you want to slow things down, you can grab clips at 480fps in 720p or 240fps in 1080p quality.

Aside from the new all-glass design and a few minor tweaks to OxygenOS (based on Android 8.1 Oreo), there really isn’t a whole lot else to say about the OnePlus 6. Its 3,300mAh battery features Fast Charge technology and it includes all of the wireless connectivity you’d expect in a modern flagship like NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and so on. Wireless charging, however, isn’t in the cards.

2018-05-16-image-3.png

The OnePlus 6 officially goes on sale worldwide on May 22 although you can scoop it up a day early at select pop-up stores. It starts at $529 for a model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and tops out at $629 if you demand 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard space. Look for it in your choice of mirror black, midnight black or silk white (note the white model doesn’t arrive until June 5).

OnePlus’ new Google Assistant-ready earphones are built around aluminum shells and feature 9.2mm drivers. They’re also magnetic; put them together and they power off. When you pull them apart, they turn on and can even resume playing music where you left off.

The buds also feature Fast Charging technology, allowing for five hours of listening time with just a 10-minute charge using any standard USB Type-C cable. They go on sale June 5 priced at $69.

People in New York were lining up around a city block to buy this $530 Android phone
Antonio Villas-Boas, Business Insider US April 11, 2018

5b05a2a21ae6621a008b4597.png
OnePlus devices are among the few Android smartphones that people line up for in masses, as they do for new iPhone releases.
Oddly enough, OnePlus devices aren’t nearly as popular as Apple’s iPhone or Samsung’s Galaxy phones.

On Monday, OnePlus hosted a small event at a pop-up store in New York where people lined up around the block to get a chance to buy the new OnePlus 6 smartphone.

Those at the head of the line started lining up around 6:30 a.m., more than 12 hours before the store opened its doors. Others took days off work and traveled from New Jersey and Long Island to stand in line. There were even some tourists from Italy.

One of the only other phones that sees massive lines of eager buyers is a new Apple iPhone.

Few Android phones have garnered as much hype as the OnePlus 6. More than 15,000 people were lining up for the phone in 26 cities across 11 countries, according to a tweet from OnePlus.

And yet it’s not a massively popular device. In New York, I’ll see many more Samsung and Apple phones than OnePlus devices. Pedestrians walking by the line who asked me what it was for had no idea what OnePlus was.

While it might not be a popular device, the $530 OnePlus 6 is a fantastic smartphone that easily contends with the $1,000 iPhone X. It doesn’t have features like wireless charging or an official water-resistance rating like the iPhone X, but OnePlus fans waiting in line made it clear that they don’t really care about those kinds of things – most were lured by the OnePlus 6’s comparatively low price tag and supreme performance.

5afb7cad1ae66219008b463b.png

Some people in line even owned the Samsung Galaxy S9, which is barely two months old and has almost every feature under the sun. They were willing to switch to the OnePlus 6, a phone with fewer features.

Why?

“Stock Android” was the most common answer, referring to the clean, simple version of Android you’d usually find on OnePlus devices and on Google’s Pixel 2. Samsung’s version of Android is altered, and the company’s redesigns can result in slower performance, at least compared with phones that run stock Android.

Unfortunately, you won’t find OnePlus phones at your carrier’s store to try – you’ll need to head over to the OnePlus website if you’re interested in buying it. But you can take my glowing coverage of the OnePlus 6 and the massive lines that OnePlus loyalists form as an indication that it is, indeed, a great smartphone. Just note that it’s not available on Verizon.

Qualcomm just unveiled a new mobile platform, the Snapdragon 710 which is more powerful than the Snapdragon 660 yet sits below the flagship Snapdragon 845.

Compared to the Snapdragon 660, the Snapdragon 710 boasts double the AI performance which will see improvements in a wide range of apps such as biometrics and photography. The Snapdragon 710 is built on a 10nm process, which delivers up to 20% better performance and lower power consumption over the Snapdragon 660.

The Snapdragon 710 comes with the X15 LTE modem (up to 800Mbps download speeds and better signals) and Spectra 250 image processor, which are stepped down variants of the X20 and Spectra 280 found in the flagship 800 series. Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 710 is it’s first mobile platform outside of the flagship series to support 4K HDR video playback.

The first mobile devices equipped with Snapdragon 710 are expected to be available in the market within this quarter.

Plan to buy a Xiaomi Mi 8 for the Mrs. Wish to ask whether the sets in Lazada is ok to buy? Not an android person so i dunno anything about what global rom or whatsoever.

OK I just bought one for the wife.

The Lazada/shopee/qoo10 ones are mostly all by this one seller/company. Jtbc and his other aliases.

They can be 560+ and stock is dependent on when he wants to bring in. It can be few days or few weeks before u get the item even after confirmation. Also only "store" warranty. So if got problem, good luck (considering the guy has a poor rep for prompt replies).

640 dollars for a local set (128gb) with one year warranty from mobilesq via their website or hitecmobile at bugis via shopee.

I got mine from hitec. U can email them to ask for stock availability before u order. I ordered and had to wait 1-2 days for stock to reach their shop.

China sets which were flashed to a global rom basically there's some changes made to this thing called the bootloader. Which means android pay will no longer work (not sure if banking apps also will work) cos its recognised as something potentially hacked.

Local sets should not have the problem as they are originally flashed as global rom.

Where to buy local sets? Will siam sellers like Jtbc. Not worth the savings with such poor follow up. communication and after-sale service.
