Voted in your poll. So far servicing/repair/tyre change was done in singapore. But my last tyre change was almost done up north if not for a trade in value in my half-life tyres. A rather common and reputable tyre ws in JB quoted me tyre of the same size and brand 25% cheaper and includes all wheel alignment, balancing, tyre valves FOC.

So for me, changing tyres doesn't really require special skills so if I can do it elsewhere reputable and cheaper, I would go for it.

For servicing and repairs of my previous car, the ws and mechanic in SG was able to pinpoint to the problem all the times I went to them and the price is not exorbitant, so I went to them all the time. My current ride still has free servicing with AD so will go back to them until 4th yr onwards.

I will waive my consultancy fees if I could humbly request for a MCF cash card which some say “You never actually own a MCF cash card. You merely look after it for the next generation”   [;)]

My 2 cents:

Why business is slow

-          Authorised distributors throw in up to 3 year servicing packages for newly purchased cars

-          They also tie in new car owners with 1 to 2 year servicing packages at a  great discount to lock them in

-          Car population is relatively new – cars hardly need any repairs

-          Cars purchased with high COEs are scrapped, hence less repair business

-          Cars that extended 10 year COE for a song ($3,000) in 2009 are either scrapped or soon to be scrapped, hence no business from this segment

-          Customers are more tech savvy. They purchase engine oil online and parts form stockists and just pay labour fee to their  workshops to carry out the oil change or repair

How to drive business

-          As the saying goes – Jack of all trades but master of none : Specialise and create a niche market, eg Japanese and Korean cars. Once word passes around, business comes in naturally. Eg, if your Renault needs repair, Espace Service Centre comes into mind straightaway. Same goes for Mercedes Benz – MBM Wheelpower

-          Create servicing packages like the authorized distributors do – 1 or 2 year servicing packages

-          It’s not true that majority service their cars in Malaysia – many don’t like the hassle an dthere is no guarantee the parts used are genuine

-          Build rapport with customers and win their trust with honesty

-             Provide transport to the nearest MRT if the servicing or repair takes considerable time to complete

Recently, I have receive feedback from workshops that their business is slow even during this CNY period. My objective here is to understand and study how can workshop better facilitate our motoring need and advice them accordingly. your opinion and feedback is very valuable to us!

I will randomly reward 10 participants with our MCF cashcard!

I still send back my car to agent for service but not for tyre change. But my Altis is fully serviced by outside workshop

I believe most who go back to agent for servicing will not do their tyre change there. Your poll should segregate servicing from tyre change.

I may be wrong, but I think there's a side effect of Uber/Grab going into rental business.

Their large fleet of rental cars still require maintenance, changing tyres, batteries, and general servicing.

However, these businesses does not go to the regular workshop on the streets.

It's negotiated with certain workshops and bcuz the qty of service is huge, the price is pushed down very low. Example, they may earn $5 for each oil change compared to a regular workshop making $50

So these businesses has been changed from retail-like to more distributor-like kind of pricing.

When these rental cars need a battery or tyre change, it goes through those workshops, being pressed down on pricing.

So it would appear that many car workshops will suffer, if they are out of the circle and not doing something special or niche business.

3 years ago about 50% of the cars are 7 to 10 years old, these cars are mostly serviced by third party workshops. After the recent 3 years of bumper crops of COE supplies, 40 to 50% of the cars are now new and mostly have 3 to 5 years warranty, these cars will go back to agents for service, that may be one of the reasons the workshops are getting less business.

These stats are available from Onemotoring.

Based on car population as of Dec 2017, 39% of cars (236k) are below 3 yrs, of which 10% is between 2 - 3 years.

That means there are 61% of cars are out of warranty.

The above stats is based on private + PHV totalling 621k.

For me, I would like a third party workshop to be more professional in the way they handle my car.  A few observations:

- very often, when i collect my car, the steering wheel and door handle are dirtied by the oily hands of the mechanic. they should take better cleanliness  care when handling our car during servicing.

- be more complete when servicing our car, i will always have to remind them to perform full preventive maintenance service and check of all components. Still, at times they miss out items that are suppose to be due for repair , service or replacement.

- be able to wash engine compartment, or at least tie up with workshops that has the appropriate setup to clean up engine compartment.

- of course, honest and reasonable in price. No need to be the cheapest but dependable and trustworthy.

Hi kobayashiGT, refer to the bar chart which compares the number of cars used to be serviced by third party workshop in 2014 vs end 2017. The x-axis represent car age and y-axis represent qty. The blue bars represent scenario in 2014, whereas the orange bars represent data as of end 2017.  One can clearly see a huge amount of "old" cars have "disappeared" because they have now become new cars and are serviced by the  respective agents.  the population has been shifted to orange bars in 1,2,and 3 years. This is in relative terms, it is one of the reasons the workshops are experiencing a drop in cars being serviced by them.

The problem is that you are in the minority of owners who want quality over price.

The more attentive a worker is, the more time per car he has to spend, and hence he can only service a certain number of cars daily.

Preventive maintenance leads to complaints by cost conscious owners who complain that the mechanics/workshops change parts for no good reason or are trying to cheat them.

Washing? There is a cost and this gets passed onto the customer, and again not everyone wants to pay for it..

There are many drivers who only want the cheapest with the least done in the quickest time..

That's why I ask which workshop can meet his requirement. Till now no reply

Neutral Newbie

I would definitely not enter this workshop 'Perfect Werkz' at Synergy@KB. Dishonest and terrible workshop. SOLD me replica tyres and rims, use replica or 2nd hand parts for repairs and charged me for original parts pricing. Told me that they have limited edition etc but after sending it to my other friend workshop then I was told the parts was not the original one. They will do unnecessary repairs and keep the original parts and replacing it with replica parts or 2nd hand parts.  :pissed-off:

I was a victim too once :(
