In one week there was several tragic deaths on the road

1) NUS student take Taxi at Commonwealth - Killed taking Taxi

2) Lady at Bukit Timah - Killed in a Mercedes

3) Pedestrians at YCK - Killed walking

Take Taxi die, Drive Car Die, Walk also Die...

It has been disturbing me all weekend, what do you think is the root cause

Is it a road design issue in general, or are drivers here in Singapore become more callous and careless?

Or is everyone so tired, stressed/over worked that rushing around with no concentration while driving?

Turbocharged

It is a very sad and unnecessary losses of lives, one life lost is one too many.

I was just thinking about this before lunch, trying to figure out any reasons for the inexplicable.

I came to a few plausible reasons:

Clementi case seems to be an inexperienced driver, who sped up through a major junction despite having the right of way. The flyover was a blind spot and by the time he could spot the taxi turning, it was too late. The taxi driver assumed it was clear and thought he was protected by the turning car on his left.

The YCK case, without further information, seems reckless.

I vaguely recall such accidents were quite rare in the past.

I think it boils down to poor judgement, fatigue from smartphones.

The population increase also put a strain on the traffic.

Could be due to people nowadays very impatient, since some of the accident can be avoided de. Example when car crash at the traffic junction. Many times it is due to driver impatient, never wait and ensure the other side of the traffic is clear before turning right. And also many drivers beat amber and red lights which also contribute to accident.

Its a bit of both.

Driver issues - impatient, careless or reckless

Road / Traffic light issue - There are still room for improvement on the existing traffic light system and configuration. For e.g

Introduce a right turn on green arrow only.

Introduce timer system at traffic light, like those in Malaysia and Thailand.

What happened to the IVR evidence. I am sure most cars have installed so has the authorities retrieved them ?

It should be made compulsory and checked during registration for new vehicles, including buses, lorries heavy vehicles like cranes dump trucks etc... and regular inspections for older vehicles before renewing road tax.

This will certainly help us better understand the root or probable cause/s to these ugly accidents.

I remembered that I received a fine of $70 when driving along marine parade road at a speed of 72km/h few ten years ago.

it seem like the traffic police has been lack in controlling the speed limit in those national road recent years.

the design of our traffic light at those big and busy cross junction is also another problem, especially for those right turning

veh. the best way is veh only allow to turn upon green arrow and not just leaving the judgement to the driver.

accident can be avoided if driver observe the speed limit.

It's normalcy.

Last time crossing road and driving was a big deal and people took a lot of care.

Even watching TV was a big deal and older members would be screaming don't sit so close or you will go blind or don't sit so close in case the TV explodes.

Last time crossing the road people so kancheong look left, look right until safe then hold the child hand very tightly and then cross when it's safe.

Not no hand holding just let the small child run here, run there on the road.

Last time every time a young person get into the car some old person will say drive safely hor you still young, roads very dangerous hor.

Not everything is so casual. People walk under car park barrier just walk under and get hit. Last time people very careful avoid going directly under the bar.

Body here but mind miles away.

This is why you can find many right turning traffic light at junction already changed to green arrow then vehicles can turn, could be due to too many accident happened at junction due to poor judgement or impatient of many driver.

A decal on the lorry showed it belonged to a company called Chang Fu located at Northstar @ AMK. When Channel NewsAsia contacted the company, a man named Xu Hsu Jing said his son had been driving the lorry when the accident occurred.

"My son said his vision went blurry and that he couldn't see anything before the accident happened," Mr Xu said in Mandarin.

He said he was not sure about the extent of his son's injuries and was still waiting to see him. The police have spoken to him and his son, he added.

It's attitude problem.

People think they know everything and so you cannot tell people anything.

The t bone taxi driver did he think he was a reckless driver?

If you talk to him before the accident he will probably tell you he is a very safe driver with many years of experience.

He will probably tell you other people not safe and don't know how to drive but he is a very good driver.

Most people over estimate their abilities.

95% of people think they are above average in intelligence.

99% of people think they are very good drivers.

Vision went blurry? Something like people suddenly feel dizzy while driving? Like this how?

most prob the hp display went out of focus......this kind of excuse.......he killed 3! I am at a lost for word! No excuse or reason can justify the carnage he had caused.

Dunno how true. Would it make the driver panic and step on the accelerator? It never happen to me before. It's tough to comment.

The one at Jalan Anak Bukit road where the bus and merc collided at the road junction. Can tell the junction is confusing. Somemore it happened at midnight, it's dark and dunno whether the driver is alert and sober.
